Did you know that vitamin deficiencies have been associated with the development and course of fatty liver disease?
In recent years, the communication between our brain and the gut, known as the ‘gut-brain axis’, has been increasingly studied. But what about its role in IBS?
A Belgian research group recruited female IBS patients and healthy controls to further investigate the role of gut and brain responses to FODMAPs. Each participant was infused with a large dose of fructans, glucose or saline solution across three study visits. After the infusion, participants underwent a brain scan, to observe their brain activity and responses to the solution given.
The results? Although fructans produced similar small bowel movements and gas in both IBS and healthy groups, IBS patients reported an increase of symptoms following fructans infusion. The study also showed that in participants given fructans, pain-related brain regions responded more actively in IBS than healthy controls.
All these findings support the theory that an altered gut-brain axis may cause IBS patients to respond to gut changes more than healthy individuals.
Authors have concluded that further research is essential to investigate the relationship between our gut and brain, especially in the IBS population. Nevertheless, this study adds value to the importance of targeting hypersensitivity in clinical practice, such as hypnotherapy or behavioural therapy.

Iron deficiency is a common cause of too few healthy red blood cells in the body (anaemia).
Fatigue is the most common symptom
You may wonder how iron impacts your thyroid?
A deficiency of iron among other nutrients would result in reduced T3 production causing you to experience hypothyroid symptoms.
In a pregnant woman, iron deficiency puts the baby at risk of developmental delays.
How do you treat iron deficiency?
If you suspect iron deficiency as a cause of your fatigue or other symptoms because of heavy menses, poor diet or diets associated with poorer intake of iron (e.g. veganism) you need to let your doctor run some labs to make sure that you really treat the cause of your symptom. Treatment would involve correcting the diet, iron supplements, vitamin C and treating the cause of the iron losses.

💕This is especially true for toddlers. When a two-year-old has begun to engage in pretend play, you’ll notice it throughout the day and not just when pretending with stuffed animals, dolls or other toys. When in the kitchen, the wooden spoon might suddenly transform into a telephone as your toddler puts it up to his ear and pretends to call Grandma to tell her what you’re baking together. At mealtimes, penne pasta becomes a trumpet as they “toot-toot” through the tube of pasta throughout dinner!

At the end of Pregnancy Awareness Week, we can talk a little about blood sugar control in pregnancy.
Those who develop gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
In most cases, there are no symptoms. A blood sugar test during pregnancy is used for diagnosis.
Treatment strategies include daily blood sugar monitoring, a healthy diet, exercise and monitoring the baby. If blood sugar is too high, medication is required.
Magnesium, zinc, selenium, calcium, vitamin D and E (alone or in combination) were found to significantly improve glycemic control in women with GDM compared to those receiving placebos.
Making the diet more nutrient dense can therefore improve the outcomes of the delivery, for the neonate and then for the mother to remain healthy.

It’s a common misconception that you have to completely avoid vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower if you have a thyroid problem.
These foods contain goitrogens, which, when taken in in large amounts, can disrupt thyroid hormone production.
The key word here is LARGE AMOUNTS. So, unless you’re eating bucketloads of broccoli daily, there’s no need to avoid.
In fact, most of these foods contain beneficial vitamins, minerals and fibre that will do more good than harm when incorporated into your diet.
While we focus on thyroid health this month, we can talk about a very important nutrient... Selenium.
It has a lot of functions and deficiencies can lead to improper conversion of your T 4 hormone to your T3 hormone.
There is more vegetarian food sources of selenium however just including nuts (especially brazil nuts) and seeds (especially sunflower seeds) in your diet often can make significant differences.
You can sprinkle them in your oats, use as snack, trial mix, or make crackerbread from them. My favourite recipes include Swedish crackerbreads, seedcackers and nut/seed bar.
