Although a solar system generally requires very little maintenance, a professional inspection and cleaning of your solar panel array should be done at least 2 to 4 times yearly, depending on the size of the system and enviromental factors in your area.

A general misconception is that a good rain shower will clean your panels, and yes, it may wash away some of the dust and debris, but it will never clean your panels completely. The issue is that dirt washed off from the rest of the panel by rain, accumulates at the bottom of the panel, causing increased soiling on the bottom part of the bottom row of solar cells.

In addition, solar panel inspections can identify cracked panels, or loose connections which increases the risk of short circuit and fire. Thermal inspections identifies hot spots on panels which might also lead to an increased risk of fires.

A solar system is a huge investment, and needs proper maintenance to ensure the best return on investment and longevity of the system.

Eskom plans to apply for a 32% tariff increase from 1 April 2023/24. The high increase is to recover the additional spent on diesel (from R5b to R16b), procurement of energy from IPP's and an adjustment of the value of Eskom's regulatory asset base.

Currently Eskom's generation capacity is at 25 000 MW, where estimate peak capacity at night and early morning rises to 30 000 MW.

As per a statement issued by Eskom today, stage 4 will continue until atleast Saturday, with more than 16 000 MW of capacity unavailble due to breakdowns.
