The Two Oceans Aquarium team is proud to have supported Save a fishie for the kick-off cleanup of their coastal cleanup series! 🩵 With clear skies and an enthusiastic community, it was the perfect start to what will be 7 weeks of daily cleanups hosted by Zoë and the Save A Fishie squad.
Together, we picked up over a ton of beach litter at Lagoon Beach - 1 035kg! Thank you to everyone for their awesome team spirit and commitment to preserving our ocean health! 🪸
The Aquarium wishes the best of luck to the Coast 2 Coast team, and we'd like to encourage our regular Trash Bashers and other fans to head over to Save A Fishie's website to find the full schedule of their upcoming cleanups (there is almost certainly one at your nearest beach): https://saveafishie.co.za/coast-to-coast/

Meet the team at the Turtle Conservation Centre! 🐢🩵
With the daily demands of caring for turtles undergoing rehabilitation at the Turtle Conservation Centre, it is vital that the group of people caring for them are highly skilled, compassionate, and capable. Our turtle team is just that. 🙌 🩺
From preparing food, dispensing vitamins, and recording turtle behaviours to administering medication, managing enrichment schedules, and taking X-rays, our team works around the clock to provide their patients with the highest possible standard of care and contribute to the recovery of turtle numbers worldwide. 💙

Let’s turn the tide together—sea you there! 🤩

Meet the Porky filefish! 🐟
Spotted across the Western Indian Ocean, these fascinating creatures call shallow estuaries and coastal reefs home —often swimming solo or in pairs. 🪸
With their deep, laterally flattened bodies, long flowing fins, and rough, sandpaper-like skin, it’s no wonder they’re known as "filefish."
Interestingly, juvenile Porky filefish often drift through the open ocean alongside jellyfish —an unlikely but amazing pairing! 🪼
Why do turtles become stranded on beaches in the first place?
In this next chapter of Turtle TV, created in partnership with FNB, we explore common reasons sea turtles can become distressed, like cold-stunning and injury. Learn what happens when a rescued turtle arrives at our Turtle Conservation Centre - from documentation to veterinary intervention. And, more importantly, how can YOU become a turtle rescuer.
We hope these episodes empower you to learn, share, and support marine conservation. Whether through donations, volunteering, making sustainable life decisions, or simply spreading awareness, you become a part of every rescued turtle's journey back to the ocean.

SPEAKER: Dr Judy Mann-Lang
TITLE: Communicating for Marine Conservation – Lessons from South Africa
Judy is passionate about the oceans, and inspiring people to care for nature. Throughout her career she has combined these two passions through education and training, management, leadership and research. After 30 years at the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), she is now building the new People and Ocean Unit for the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation. She holds degrees in Ichthyology (MSc), Business Administration (BTech) and a PhD from the University of Queensland. With the realization that without a better understanding of people we are unlikely to solve our conservation challenges, she shifted her research focus from fish to people and she now studies communication, behaviour change, socio-cultural aspects of learning and marine protected areas, in a uniquely African context. She started Marine Protected Areas Day and the African Penguin NotOnOurWatch campaign. In 1999 she co-founded the South African Marine and Coastal Educators Network (MCEN). She serves on numerous international boards and committees and serves on the UN Ocean Decade Working Group 10 and the first IUCN Protected and Conserved Areas Behaviour Change Task Team. Human behaviour fascinates her and getting out into nature keeps her inspired. Supporting the next generation of marine conservationists is now her focus.

SPEAKER: Dr Bruce Mann
TITLE: Establishment and monitoring of the Pondoland Marine Protected Area in the Eastern Cape, South Africa
Dr Bruce Mann was employed as a research scientist at the Research Institute in Durban, South Africa from 1992 to 2022 (30 years). He retired in March 2023. His research focused on the biology and management of marine linefish (i.e. fish caught by hook and line), including the importance of MPAs as a management tool. He is a keen angler and diver and is passionate about the conservation of South Africa’s marine fish species.
