The elegant pink blooms of the moor Disa (𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺𝘪) can be found in localised areas in wetlands and seepages in grassland vegetation in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. This beautiful orchid flowers from December through to January. The blooms are pollinated by long-tongued flies.
Subpopulations of the moor Disa have significantly decreased due to wetland disturbance, overgrazing and trampling by cattle as well as forestry plantation expansion. It is listed as on the . Photo: Brendan Cole/iNaturalist.

For this we take a closer look at the blue bonnet Disa (𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 var. 𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴), one of the most spectacular members of the genus. This stunning orchid is relatively widespread, distributed from the Cape Flats (where it is almost extinct) eastwards to Cathcart and Somerset East in the Eastern Cape. However, numbers are declining, mainly due to coastal housing development.
The blue bonnet Disa often grows within clumps of Restios and blooms in mature veld from October through to January. It's thought that they are pollinated by large bees or fruit chafer beetles but that most of the pollinators that would have visited these orchids in the southwestern Cape Floristic Region are now extinct. The blue bonnet Disa is listed as on the . Photo by ‘linkie’/iNaturalist.
