Understanding Martial Arts South Africa: A Conversation with Master Viviers

A practising martial artist approaches Master Viviers, the President of Martial Arts South Africa (MASA), with some questions about the organisation and its benefits.

*Martial Artist:* Master Viviers, I’m a practising martial artist, and I’ve been considering joining Martial Arts South Africa. Could you tell me why I should join MASA and what benefits it offers?

*Master Viviers:* Absolutely, I’d be happy to explain. Martial Arts South Africa, or MASA, serves as the governing body for most non-IOC martial arts and non-Olympic martial arts, as well as martial arts that have IOC recognition but do not yet have a proper national footprint. Our goal is to ensure that these non-Olympic arts are legitimate practices in the country and provide a structured environment for all practitioners. By joining MASA, you’re becoming part of a community that values integrity, respect, unity, fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

*Martial Artist:* What exactly does MASA do?

*Master Viviers:* MASA’s main function is to oversee and ensure that all our affiliated members comply with government regulations, particularly the South African Safeguarding Policy. This policy is crucial for protecting women, children, and other vulnerable individuals from harm. We aim to create a safe and professional environment for everyone involved in martial arts. As a member, you would be assured that you are practising in a legitimate, regulated, and supportive environment.

*Martial Artist:* Are there other organisations affiliated with SASCOC that also have martial arts or martial arts federations?

*Master Viviers:* Yes, there are other national federations under the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) that govern martial arts. These include:

- *Olympic Federations:*
- *Taekwondo South Africa* manages Olympic Taekwondo and is regulated by the Olympic structure.
- *Judo South Africa* governs Judo, another Olympic-recognised sport. Both Taekwondo and Judo are directly affiliated with SASCOC due to their status as Olympic sports.

- *Non-Olympic Federations Recognised by the IOC:*
- *Karate South Africa* is governed by the World Karate Federation (WKF), which is an IOC member. Karate was part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but is currently not included in future Olympic Games. Karate South Africa adheres strictly to the WKF rules and regulations.
- *South African Kickboxing Association* is also an IOC member and is recognised by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), which is an IOC-recognised body. This organisation also only accepts members who comply with WAKO's rules and regulations.

While these organisations are IOC members, they are not currently recognised as Olympic sports. They are directly affiliated with SASCOC but follow strict rules and structures set by their respective international bodies.

*Martial Artist:* How does MASA differ from these other organisations?

*Master Viviers:* What makes MASA different is that we are an open-style, or umbrella body, that welcomes all martial arts styles. Unlike the other federations that are restricted to specific rules and regulations of their international bodies, MASA is inclusive and accommodates various martial arts practices, whether they are IOC-recognised or not, as long as they meet our standards and regulations. This inclusivity allows us to support a wider range of martial arts, providing a platform for growth and development across multiple disciplines.

*Martial Artist:* Can you tell me more about MASA’s international affiliations?

*Master Viviers:* MASA is affiliated with the World Martial Arts Committee (WMAC), an international organisation that promotes martial arts globally. The WMAC is a multi-discipline martial arts organisation that includes a wide variety of martial arts styles under its umbrella. Its aim is to unify martial artists and provide a platform for different styles to come together, compete, and share their knowledge and skills.

The WMAC organises international competitions and events, offering opportunities for martial artists of all levels to compete on a global stage. It also works to standardise rules and regulations across different martial arts disciplines to ensure fair competition and promote the values of martial arts, such as respect, discipline, and integrity.

Additionally, WMAC is affiliated with TAFISA, the Association for International Sport for All. TAFISA is a global organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and focuses on promoting physical activity and sport for all worldwide. Through this affiliation, WMAC, and consequently MASA, aligns with international efforts to promote sports inclusively. TAFISA's recognition and support further enhance the credibility and reach of WMAC and its member organisations, like MASA.

*Martial Artist:* How does this affiliation benefit MASA and its members?

*Master Viviers:* Being part of the WMAC and TAFISA allows MASA and its members to participate in international events and competitions, providing our martial artists with the opportunity to compete and showcase their skills on a global stage. It also ensures that our practices and standards are aligned with international norms, promoting fair play and integrity. Additionally, these affiliations enhance our educational resources and training, ensuring our instructors and practitioners are well-equipped to teach and practise martial arts safely and ethically.

*Martial Artist:* I have students who are not very concerned about high-performance tournaments or achieving national colours. They just want to practise martial arts as a recreational activity with their family, maybe attending a club tournament occasionally. How does MASA handle this?

*Master Viviers:* All martial artists and members are welcome in MASA, regardless of whether they are highly competitive or mainly focused on recreational activities. MASA believes that all martial arts should have a governing body to ensure safety and professionalism. This helps protect the community and regulate martial arts practices. Whether someone is training for high-profile international competitions or simply enjoying martial arts as a family activity, MASA treats all practices equally. We encourage everyone to belong to a national federation to help them stay in line with government regulations and protect the community from predators and fraudulent individuals. In MASA, we welcome everyone equally, whether they are competitive or recreational.

*Martial Artist:* Can you explain more about MASA's national colour selection policies and the importance of provincial structures?

*Master Viviers:* Of course. One of MASA's key responsibilities is to oversee the selection of national and provincial colours for martial arts in South Africa. This is a significant honour and a mark of excellence for any martial artist. To be eligible for national colours, our members must meet specific criteria set out by MASA and SASCOC. This includes ensuring that our provincial structures function properly and work together in accordance with MASA's guidelines of unity and working principles that I mentioned earlier. It is important for the provinces to collaborate for members to be able to achieve these benefits. Only organisations that comply with our national standards will be eligible for these privileges. This collaboration helps maintain the integrity and high standards of martial arts in South Africa.

Currently, we are improving our provincial structures across all regions of South Africa. These structures are crucial because they ensure that the martial arts practised in those areas and the competitions they compete in are regulated by the MASA provincial structures, and that the tournaments are standardised to comply with selection criteria. This regulation is carried out throughout the country, providing a clear pathway for athletes to progress from provincial to national levels according to the selection criteria standards provided by MASA and the national standards provided by SASCOC, as well as the overall national standards used by most sporting federations. Without a strong provincial presence, members cannot qualify for provincial colours, which are a prerequisite for national selection. This helps us maintain a consistent level of quality and integrity across all martial arts disciplines under MASA. In respect to styles that differ from each other, MASA follows the international bodies' guidelines of having generic rules for specific disciplines that have similarities with each other. Stand-up sports, contact fighting sports, and grappling each have standardised rules and regulations for them to compete in a MASA provincial tournament.

*Martial Artist:* What kind of policies does MASA implement to ensure safety and professionalism?

*Master Viviers:* One of our key policies is the safeguarding policy, which requires all members, coaches, and instructors to have police clearance and clearance from the sexual offenders database. Additionally, we require all coaches to have a valid first aid certificate and a recognised instructor’s certificate or licence. These measures ensure that everyone involved in teaching martial arts in South Africa is qualified and trustworthy, creating a safe environment for all practitioners.

*Martial Artist:* It sounds like MASA has a strong focus on standards and integrity. Why is that so important?

*Master Viviers:* It is crucial for us to maintain high standards of teaching and integrity because martial arts are about more than just physical skill; they are about discipline, respect, and personal growth. We ensure that any school or instructor teaching multiple martial arts is qualified to teach each discipline they advertise. This maintains the authenticity and quality of martial arts in South Africa, protecting both the practitioners and the art itself.

*Martial Artist:* Thank you, Master Viviers, for explaining all this. It’s clear that MASA provides a lot of value and support to its members.

*Master Viviers:* You’re very welcome. We strive to create a safe, respectful, and professional environment for everyone involved in martial arts, and we’re here to support the growth and development of all our members.
