RAVE REVIEWS POURING IN: thank you Siobhan Cassidy and Beverley Brommert for these insightful reviews of Isidlamlilo/ The Fire Eater. The production runs at The Baxter for one more week until 19 April 2025, book at Webtickets online or at Pick n Pay stores .
By Beverley Brommert:
Durban-based theatre-maker Mpume Mthombeni ignites the Baxter's Flipside theatre with her fiery portrayal of Zenzile Maseko, a resilient sexagenarian who has survived decades of ongoing violence.
In Neil Coppen's unforgiving monologue lasting over an hour and a half, the performer takes the audience through a journey that entertains (the script is ripe with earthy humour) and appals as it progresses towards an unexpectedly gentle dénouement.
Never once does her impersonation of this remarkable character falter, even when other personae are introduced to enliven the action, some recognisable types, others vividly individualistic. All are single-handedly conveyed with aplomb.
Apart from her highly accomplished performance, credit must also be given to the designers of set and lighting, Greg King and Tina le Roux respectively.
Both play a significant part in capturing the ambience of a harsh period in this country's history, as in the painful transition from apartheid to a new order some 30 years ago, many lives were wrecked or terminated in the turbulence of KwaZulu-Natal.
At once universal and uniquely South African, this woman's experience engrosses spectators in a production that represents a high point in this country's theatrical achievement.
Yet another in the growing list of memorable offerings from the Baxter's various venues.

#JustMen
THE NEXT CONVERSATION TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS #JUSTMEN RETURNS TO THE BAXTER TO ADDRESS TOXIC MASCULINITY, FROM 17 JULY TO 3 AUGUST
Book at Webtickets here: http://bit.ly/2NcWZyg
With the spread of the #MeToo disclosures last year, #JustMen challenged men to take collective ownership in fighting the curse of violence against women - which, at its core, is a man's issue. In South Africa in particular, the frequent cases of abuse, r**e and murder perpetrated against children and women continue to soar, reaching explosive and unacceptable proportions. Now, a year later the media frenzy around gender-based violence has mostly cooled, yet this is not any less relevant. This follow-up season of #JustMen aims to start the next conversation about the role of toxic masculinity, and turning the tide on this scourge of violence. Recognising that this important conversation needs to continue, the production asks the question: “What needs to happen for men to truly heal and change?”
#JustMen is an honest and empowering multi-lingual, docudrama about men, performed by South African men who tell their own stories and confront their own toxic masculinity as a contributing factor in the violence perpetuated against women and children.
