OROMO CHILDREN ARE NAMED AFTER 2-3 YEARS
In Oromo tradition of Ethiopia and Kenya, names carry deep cultural and personal significance. When a child is born, they are not named immediately. Instead, the family waits around two to three years to hold a communal naming ceremony known as Gubbissa or Maqaabaasa.

During this period, the child may be referred to using affectionate or informal names chosen by the parents.

The Oromo naming practice is often influenced by the circumstances surrounding the birth such as the season, special events, the family's situation, or even the child’s looks and behavior at birth.

The length of the naming ceremony also varies; for a firstborn child, it traditionally lasts three days, while for others, the celebration typically takes just one day.
