This is a two-year programme, and it combines distance-based learning with compulsory contact sessions. The contact sessions are held on the University of the Free State campus in Bloemfontein.
The course is essentially part-time, and you can continue working while studying.

Job description
One postdoctoral position is available aligned with the NRF SARCHI Chair in โCity-Region Economiesโ, Professor Ivan Turok, at the University of the Free State (South Africa) and the Human Sciences Research Council (South Africa).
Desired Skills and experience
A PhD in a discipline related to urban and regional economics, economic geography, urban planning, development studies or a cognate subject is required. The successful candidate will be required to conduct original research on urban and regional economies and development in South Africa or elsewhere in Africa. A bursary of R250,000 per annum is available.
Potential research themes include:
โข Urbanisation, industrialisation and economic development
โข The formal and informal economy of cities
โข Key manufacturing and service industries
โข Urban housing, property and land markets
โข Spatial economic patterns and trends
โข Dynamic places โ central cities, business nodes and township economies
โข Urban labour markets, unemployment and poverty
The fellowship is open to all South African and foreign nationals who graduated with a PhD degree in a relevant discipline within the last five years. Applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS (Bloemfontein) or HSRC (Cape Town or Durban) for the duration of the fellowship. You can also apply if you expect to finish your PhD in the next six months (your supervisor should provide a letter in this respect).
Tasks
โข Register as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research
โข Do innovative research on urban and regional economies;
โข Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHETโaccredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books;
โข Assist in postgraduate supervision;
