OPINION: : Let's not forget overlooked ‘voices’ in celebrating 30 years of democracy
For the past three decades, we have seen the concept of remembering in our country taking a form of exclusion, a form of pushing towards the peripheral marginalised voices who paid with their bodies and souls so that we could call South Africa home without our voices trembling with fear; so that we could proudly call ourselves gay without feeling like illegals in our country.
So how did we move to a time that recognises heritage from a dominant patriarchal narrative?
Words that used to define a seemingly transforming society, ‘democracy’ and ‘heritage’ have changed meaning and taken on a new form of injustice.

Vincent Mahapa, a dedicated 21-year-old from Bronkhorstspruit east of Pretoria, was recognised for his exceptional academic achievements by being awarded the prestigious Dux prize at the event.

The Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Office (GEADO) at UFS recently donated sanitary towels to ‘Give a Flower for a Change’, a community development initiative that works with Unity Primary School in Bloemfontein.

Local youth trailblazer honoured for outstanding community service
University of the Free State (UFS) student, Pfarelo Maphangula, was recently recognised at the Youth Legacy Excellence Awards.
The Youth Legacy Excellence Awards acknowledge and honour exceptional youth in Ekurhuleni who are nominated in the categories of Arts and Culture, Health, Media and Entertainment, Justice and Law, Business and Entrepreneurship, Philanthropy, Civil Society and Youth Activism, Politics and Governance, Skills Development, Science, Innovation and Technology Environment, and Sports.
“Seeing how even small efforts can transform lives inspired me to dedicate my time to philanthropy, focusing on creating better access to opportunities for young people like me,” Maphangula says.

UFS Alumna Miné Kleynhans wins SASOL New Signatures Competition
Miné Kleynhans, UFS Art Gallery Project Coordinator and alumna, has been crowned the overall winner of the prestigious SASOL New Signatures Art Competition 2024 for her striking artwork, Meditations on Resentment.
Her interactive piece invites viewers to explore hidden emotions, urging them to physically engage with the work in a personal, contemplative ritual.
"I am incredibly excited and grateful for this recognition," says Miné. "It will shape my artistic journey in ways I’m still trying to comprehend."
This win is a testament to the incredible talent emerging from the UFS, and the importance of platforms such as SASOL New Signatures in shaping South Africa’s artistic landscape.
