UFS Sporting Legends: Kovsies provided Karla with perfect balance to excel
The University of the Free State (UFS) not only gave Karla Pretorius an opportunity to kickstart her illustrious netball career, but she believes it also provided her with a balanced environment to thrive in as a student. The Protea star, coach, mother and dietitian has fond memories of her Kovsie times and says it set a platform for her to excel on and off the court. And this perspective now forms part of the knowledge Pretorius, who has played in three World Cups and became only the fifth South African to reach 100 tests, is now imparting to aspiring youngsters. She features in the 𝗨𝗙𝗦 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, which acknowledges current and former Kovsie sports stars by celebrating their journeys in a video and story series. The former Protea cricketer Ryan McLaren looks back on his days at Kovsies with gratitude. For the all-rounder, who represented South Africa in all three formats, the “camaraderie and friendships built” are highlights while playing for the University of the Free State. “When we get together after not seeing each other for years and play an old Kovsie game now, immediately there’s a bond. “And that is what is special to me about being a former Kovsie.” Now serving as a Commercial Manager and Cricket Specialist at Grey College, McLaren thrives on making a difference in the lives of the younger generation. He is an ambassador for the UFS Sporting Legends project, which celebrates current and former Kovsie sports stars by featuring their journeys in a video and story series. The series looks at the impact the UFS has had on their careers, how it has uniquely shaped them, and helped them to excel – whether in sport or the world of work. Mating Monokoane was appointed University of the Free State (UFS) women's soccer captain in 2021 and leads from the front. The midfielder from Maseru who started playing for the UFS in 2019 made her international debut for Lesotho in 2018. She is an ambassador for the UFS Sporting Legends project, which celebrates current and former Kovsie sports stars by featuring their stories in a video and story series.
