Uyleta Nel-Marais is a University of the Free State LLB graduate (2014) and has been a Director of Lovius Block Attorneys in Bloemfontein since 2019, after starting as a Candidate Attorney at Lovius Block in 2014. She was crowned Mrs Universe South Africa in 2022 and finished in the top 25 of the 2023 global Mrs Universe competition.
After starting as a Candidate Attorney in September 2014, she successfully completed her LLB in December 2014 and her board exams to be admitted as a legal practitioner in 2016. She continued her studies to specialise as a conveyancer and notary public, being admitted in the High Court in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Within three years of becoming professionally certified, Nel-Marais became a director at Lovius Block in 2019. In 2022, she was elected as a Council Member at the Free State Legal Council and began her philanthropy work by founding the initiative One Nation: Our Women and Children Against Gender-Based Violence. Using her legal background, she has been able to help victims of gender-based violence by offering legal advice, and as Mrs Universe South Africa 2022, she used her resources to collect basic necessities for victims.
She says she had never considered modelling before entering Mrs Universe South Africa because she was too busy studying. Her journey started in 2019 when she was invited to model at a fashion show in Boksburg. She later walked the runway during New York Fashion Week 2020 and participated in Top Model (now known as Opulent Models) that same year. As a proud ambassador for the UFS, Nel-Marais says she is privileged to be able to use her legal background and title to help others.

Sebabatso Tsaoane (28) is a multi-award-winning Registered Nurse Midwife, Founder and CEO of the Black Woman Arise Womenโs Health Foundation, an academic, and a change agent. She holds a masterโs degree in Nursing and constantly goes beyond the call of duty to manifest her vision of healing the nation by healing women.
Her non-profit organisation, Black Woman Arise Womenโs Health Foundation, is aimed at promoting womenโs sexual reproductive health through de-stigmatisation, education, and bridging the gap between women in the community and healthcare professionals. Through this NPO, which she started using her own funds, Tsaoane is working on a project to decrease cervical cancer-related morbidity and mortality among women in the Mangaung metro. This is done through taking cervical cancer screening services to disadvantaged and hard-to-reach areas in the Mangaung metro via a mobile clinic in order to raise awareness and promote early detection. She also provides training for nurses to improve their capacity to provide cervical cancer education and screening.
Through a partnership with the Department of Health, Tsaoane is working on opening a clinic in a district hospital to decentralise precancer treatment and reduce long waiting periods for women with positive pap smear results. As if thatโs not enough, Tsaoane provides training for traditional and faith-based leaders to empower them to better support their congregants and promote screening behaviour. This remarkable young Nurse Midwife was chosen by the International Confederation of Midwives for the Young Midwifery Leadership programme through a highly competitive process, which saw only 10 young midwives selected globally.
She has also received national and international accolades from, among others, Africaโs Brightest Young Minds, Mail & Guardian Top 50 Powerful Women 2021, Free State Premier Top 50 Inspirational Youth in the Free State 2022, and the Nation Builderโs Development Nation Builder of the Year. Her flagship annual talk show, "How I Met My Va**na", has created a platform for women from different backgrounds to celebrate the uniqueness of their womanhood.
Tsaoane was appointed a Junior Lecturer in the UFS Nursing department in 2016, placing her at the forefront of moulding the next generation of caregivers driven by the values of selfless service, professionalism, and kindness. Those who have interacted with Tsaoane hold one thing true: she has a healing spirit, a widening pool of knowledge about womenโs health, and a pure heart for community service.

Gerda Steyn completed her Quantity Surveying Honours degree at the University of the Free State in 2012 and worked as a professional quantity surveyor in Johannesburg before moving to a Dubai-based company in 2014. Then she made an even more unusual and pivotal change in career โ she decided to pursue professional athletics, and in April made history by becoming the first woman to win the Two Oceans Marathon four consecutive times.
She is also the national record holder of the standard marathon distance and represented South Africa at the 2020 Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021. At the Two Oceans Marathon held on 15 April 2023, she smashed the record she had set in 2022, finishing the race 39 seconds faster. Approximately 10,000 athletes took part, starting at the Newlands Stadium and ending on the University of Cape Townโs campus.
Shortly after her fourth win in the 56 km race, Steyn told media that her desire to inspire girls kept her motivated during the race. Her first Two Oceans first-place win took place in 2018, and she won again in 2019 and 2022 โ the marathon was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Proving that she not only has golden feet but a heart of gold, too, in 2022 she pledged to donate some of her Two Oceans winnings towards the development of athletes living in Muizenberg, Cape Town.
A true example of perseverance and hard work, she also won the Comrades Marathon in 2019 and finished seventh in the London Marathon in 2020.
Prof Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the UFS, says Steyn is an embodiment of focus and determination. โI am so proud of her. The UFS is truly the home of champions.โ
