Don’t mis it, gaan beautiful wees. Arno Carstens en sy band speel ook! Amazing outdoor sundowner vibes.

Being a live music photographer, I don't do much studio work. In fact, this is the second time I've ever attempted a studio shoot.

If you have some constructive criticism (on the shoot - not my wife), drop them below.

Happy Friday, folks!

Back to our regular programming.

Man As Machine celebrated a decade since the release of their debut album "Nothing But a Thing" this past weekend.

16/11/2021

I haven't been on my soapbox regarding the South African music industry in quite some time. In fact, it's been a good number of years since I've done any form of music journalism.

With that being said, today I feel annoyed. When I get annoyed, I feel like writing. It's cathartic.

Allow me to digress.

Yesterday, Big Concerts announced that they would be bringing out Justin Bieber in 2022.

Now, the Biebs doesn’t exactly get my motor running musically. However, it is one of the most logical, and financially viable options for an events company that size to engage in. One act, and you're almost guaranteed a sold-out show.

What this announcement has been met with has been pathetic on two counts:

1. People complaining about the act.
2. People complaining that you need to be fully vaccinated to attend.

Let's briefly pick these apart.

On the first topic. Those that are the most myopic have failed to realize that an announcement of this size and caliber is a strong signal that the entertainment industry is trying to get back on its feet.

Yes, the Biebs arrival in SA may not have you immediately reaching for the aux cord to blast out his hits - but have some foresight and realize that this is an indication that shows are coming back.

With them coming back, you may in fact get a chance to see an act you like (unless you're being specifically elitist and only want to watch extreme-gore-death-grind-black-metal bands like xXx-Slaytanic-Bloodbath-Princess-of-the-Haunted-Demon-Forest-xXx.).

Additionally, please stop with the comments like "YoU sHuLd HaV BoOkEd SlIpKnOT. They can fill FnB stadium".

No, they can't. Wrap your head around it. There simply aren't enough people into that genre to pack out FnB for an act like that (especially at the ticket price that would need to be charged). The same goes for most acts I saw thrown out there. Sure, they'd pull a crowd, but nothing near what pop music pulls.

If you're going to be "alternative", "edgy", "metal", or "against the grain" in anyway, you need to realize that the larger events companies are not always catering for you (there are specific event companies that keep you in mind - RAMfest, Krank'd Up, AMP Events, Oppikoppi, Mieliepop, etc).

You are in the minority. It's something you revel in. You brag about it to your friends that you're "different", and then act surprised when you aren't always catered for.

You can't have your cake and eat it too (please look this idiom up if your first instinct is to say, “what’s the point of having cake if I can’t eat it?”).

On the second point. Vaccination status.

I'm not here to debate your rights. Get the vaccine or don't. It's up to you. As long as you observe legislated health protocols such as mask wearing, sanitizing, etc., I can't force my opinion on you. It's your choice.

However, choices always have consequences. If choosing not to get the vaccine means you can't travel, attend shows, or go to restaurants, etc. That's it. That’s your choice, and that's the consequence.

I don't know how people can’t understand this.

Here's a simple example. You have the right to drink. You have the right to drive. You don't have the right to do both. That's the protocol for the safety of others.

The same applies here.

The point I would really like to drive home, after having sifted through some profoundly baseless comments is this:

No. Your freedom has not been stripped from you - you're making the choice.

No. It is not like how the Jewish people were treated in WWII.

No. Proof of vaccination is not a “passbook” or a “dompas”.

No. It is not even remotely similar to Apartheid, much less is it "worse than Apartheid".

If you feel that this "sanction" even fractionally touches on what real marginalized groups have been through in history, you need a serious and bracing reality check (and probably a few history classes).

With that, I'll climb off of my soapbox.

Have a good Tuesday. Go to a show.

Proof that I was on a beach this year.

If I buy a longer lens, I won't have to get out the car.

The beach is simply evil.

After leaving my editing laptop in KZN, I'm busy catching up on some editing.

While I do that, why don't you stop, drop, and roll one of your most recent photos into the comments (camera/cellphone/Gameboy photos - I don't care).

Happy Friday.

Throwback to Guns 'n Roses on their "Not in this lifetime" tour.

I think the name is pretty apt, since I didn't think this would be a band I would ever shoot.

Thankfully the staff are being helpful and honest, and will courier it up.

This is how I feel inside, waking up on a Monday, and realizing I'm on on leave!

Bianca and I finally took some time away, for the first time since the end of 2019.

Any recommendations on MUST do things in St. Lucia are more than welcome!

Taken at Fokofpolisiekar #18andfoknkeen show at Sognage.

Pre-COVID shows were the best. I can't wait for stadiums filled with people.

While we are still getting back to that, we're making strides with having limited shows.
