This is very Special to me. To have Nico modeling for The New Era of my brand. Nico, who was the first ever model for VAR VARA.
Let me tell you the story about sisterhood.
Year 2012. first shoot for my own brand. I mean Instagram was not even there. What were we shooting for?I don't know..for PDF presentation maybe? God knows! But it was important to me.
Those days I was living in Bamba (oh sweet Shrubbery gardens, next to MC and most important Pillawos, no wonder all night outs would have ended up at my place) Anyway I decided shooting in The South is a great idea.
Just to remind you there was no high way yet. Clmb- Galle drive took 3 to 4 hours.
So we had to wake up at 1am to go to Kotte to do a make up, to leave Colombo by 3 to make sure we are in the South by the sunrise.
I got the whole team of friends: photographer with his wife, hairstylist with friends and family( cz it's better together right?! doesn't matter if we sit on each other's heads!) . And I hired a " luxury van" that's how they called it in add. Japanese van from the 80th without AC plus it was white. Imagine, driving around Colombo at night picking up people in a "white van". Very smart of me.

The model canceled 3 hours before saying she was emotional on that day( bless her) .Lost and furious I called Nico. " Don't you worry love I'll come now". Little did I know that Nico just got back home and haven't slept previous night. And she didn't tell me before we finished shooting. Not a word that she is tired or sick . She just did her best on that day. That's when I knew it's my girl. That's how VAR VARA girls are: strong and self made. And by this day Nico is a rock in my foundation so far away from my motherland. She is a sister.

We shoot in Thalpe for sunrise. Actually we were just dancing and shoot Nico. Then we went to shoot at the lake in Hikka for a sunset. And then drove back to Colombo by 11 at night.
23 hours photoshoot. Crazy distances via Galle road. Not much food cz we spent all the money on wine and not even one single complaint from anybody.....

I am a designer but I don't like to dress up. How weird, i thought to myself...if you work in the fashion industry all your life aren't you supposed to love all those layers on layers of fabrics and accessories, I was asking myself for a long time.
But here am I, in a minimalistic outfit with barely any make up or jewellery on me. How does it combine? Why do I work in fashion if I say materialistic things should be last in your system of values? If I say reall beauty comes from within?
And the answer found me recently. After 12 years of running my own brand .
I don't create styles to outshine you. I don't create styles which make you a different person. I make styles that make your own light shine brighter.

I take Diamonds (as I believe all my clients are) and set them into a solid frame to highlight their own beauty.But if you take them out of the frame, they will still be the Diamonds.

I don't make clothes to create your style. I create style for people who create themselves
