I gotta give respect where it's due: the only Black American who stood on principle and stayed present while all these white folks tried to remove him, as if he'd said or done something disrespectful. Peep the play—all this disrespect toward Black Americans, dropping the hard R from a white Tourette's activist. This is a concerted effort to ethically erase our lineage while co-opting our culture for profit.
This is the era where Black Americans must see ourselves as a sovereign nation within these borders. Let our GDP—our collective spending power—become our own stimulus package. Play ball.
Right now, Black buying power in the U.S. is massive and growing fast. Projections put it at around $1.98 trillion to $2.1 trillion by 2026 (sources like Nielsen, McKinsey, and recent reports from 2025–2026 confirm this trajectory, up from about $1.7–$1.8 trillion in recent years). That's enough to rank Black America as one of the world's top economies if treated separately—bigger than many countries. Yet too much of that money leaks out immediately: studies show the "Black dollar" often circulates just once (or even hours) in our communities before leaving, compared to days or weeks in others, largely due to limited Black-owned options in retail, services, banking, and more.
To flip this and build real economic networks, we gotta redirect that power inward intentionally:
Prioritize Buy Black / Circulate Black campaigns: Support Black-owned businesses first—groceries, services, fashion, tech, everything. Apps, directories (like ByBlack.us from the U.S. Black Chambers), and local "buy local Black" maps make it easier. When we spend with our own, money recirculates longer, creates jobs (Black-owned firms hire more Black folks), and builds wealth that stays home.
Join or build cooperatives and mutual aid networks: History shows this works—think Freedom Quilting Bee, Freedom Farms (Fannie Lou Hamer), or modern ones like Cooperation Jackson, urban food co-ops in Detroit/Oakland, or worker-owned spots like Cooperative Home Care Associates. Co-ops pool resources for shared ownership in stores, farms, credit unions, housing, or services.
