Tartan Fabric of Scotland Limited Edition Giclée Print - Etsy 10/10/2023

https://tindaridesign.etsy.com/listing/756872167

My latest sale, and a good opportunity to share this piece again with you!

Carefully researching the historic clan tartan patterns of Scotland, I formed a digital pattern for each area using tartan swatches, and these come together to form 'The Fabric of Scotland'.

Tartan is a piece of woven cloth (historically made from wool) that is made up of brightly coloured stripes, arranged in patterns known as ‘setts’. These intersect each other to form colourful checks. It is believed that Celts have woven plaid (tartan) cloth for thousands of years. In the Highlands tartan was spun, dyed and woven locally, and the cloth was used to make kilts.

The origin of Scottish clan tartan is difficult to pinpoint. Skilled weavers produced tartan cloth for local people, so specific tartans may well have been recognisable for certain areas, districts and possibly clans. Following the Jacobite Rising, the British Government passed the 1747 Act of Proscription in an attempt to destroy the clan system and bring the Highlands under their control. Under the conditions of this act, tartan was banned in the Highlands between 1747 and 1782, but it lived on in Scottish lowlands and in the uniforms of the Highland regiments. Following the end of proscription a new romantic re-interpretation of Scottish history began. This period, the end of the 1700s and early 1800s, was when many of the official clan tartans were formally recorded.

Available ftom my Etsy shop in standard A sizes (A1 to A4), unframed. Printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Pearl paper, printed and delivered by The Print Space.

Centaurus Constellation Boundary A Sized Limited Edition - Etsy UK 24/05/2023

One of the largest constellations, Centaurus was included among the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. In Greek mythology, Centaurus represents a centaur; a creature that is half human, half horse (another constellation named after a centaur is one from the zodiac: Sagittarius). Notable stars include Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to the Solar System, its neighbour in the sky Beta Centauri, and V766 Centauri, one of the largest stars yet discovered. The constellation also contains Omega Centauri, the brightest globular cluster as visible from Earth and the largest identified in the Milky Way, possibly a remnant of a dwarf galaxy.

The second in a series of constellation boundary prints, available in standard A-sizes, printed on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper, printed and delivered by The Print Space (if delivered to the UK and Europe), and other print partners in Australia and the US.

Aquarius. Its name is Latin for "water-carrier" or "cup-carrier", and its old astronomical symbol is Aquarius symbol (♒︎), a representation of water. Aquarius is one of the oldest of the recognised constellations along the zodiac (the Sun's apparent path). It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It is found in a region often called the Sea due to its profusion of constellations with watery associations such as Cetus the whale, Pisces the fish, and Eridanus the river.

The first in a series of prints I'm producing on some of the 88 constellations as defined by the International Astronomical Union. It's available as an A-sized giclée print (A1-A4), printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper.

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1457479297/map-of-star-constellations-limited?ref=listings_manager_grid
This map shows major stars and constellations as they can be observed from the equator, which is represented by the pink line across the centre of the map. The stars and constellations and other objects above the pink equator line can be seen in the northern hemisphere, and the ones below it in the southern hemisphere. Of course, the map is rectangular, and the sky is not! Hence why the equator line is not straight. The central U shape in lighter blue colours represents the position of the Milky Way in relation to the constellations.

A constellation is an area on the celestial sphere in which a group of visible stars forms a perceived pattern or outline, typically representing an animal, mythological subject, or inanimate object. There are 88 constellations, which are recognised by the International Astronomical Union, as well as those that cultures have recognised throughout history - imagined figures and shapes derived from the patterns of stars in the observable sky. Many officially recognised constellations are based in the imaginations of ancient, Near Eastern and Mediterranean mythologies. Twelve (or thirteen) ancient constellations belong to the zodiac.

Available from my Etsy shop in non-standard sizes due to its length, but printed as usual on high quality paper (Hahnemuhle Photo Rag), printed and delivered to you expertly by The Print Space, London.

I created this map to show the traditional flag designs of the French departments, including the overseas territories of Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, La Mayotte and La Réunion. Most of them are both non-official and traditional, as regions often use their logos as a flag, although some regions have also used their banner of arms as official flags.

The creation of the départements was decided by the Assemblée Nationale constituante. Jacques Thouret proposed a grid of 84 equal squares of 324 square leagues each, the whole design being centered on Paris. On 15 January 1790, France was divided into 83 départements, each of them being divided in cantons and communes (municipalities). The war that broke out on 20 April 1792 against the European powers led to France gaining significant territories, incorporated to France as new départements.

Napoléon I also increased the French territory: in 1810, France was constituted of 130 départements. After his fall, and the crash of the First Empire, the first Treaty of Paris in 1814 restored the former borders of France, which kept one third of Savoy (Annecy and Chambéry), Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin, Montbéliard and Mulhouse. After Napolean's come-back, named the 'Cent-Jours', in 1815, and the second Treaty of Paris later in 1815), France lost Savoy, Landau (today in Germany), and Philippeville and Marienbourg (today in Belgium), keeping only 86 départements.

In 1860, Savoy and the County of Nice were incorporated to France following local referendums, forming the départements of Savoie, Haute-Savoie and Alpes-Maritimes. The new département of Alpes-Maritimes was increased with the eastern part of the département of Var (arrondissement of Grasse); this resulted in the odd situation of the département of Var being named after a river that does not water it.

By the Treaty of Francfort (10 May 1871), France transferred to Germany the départements of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin, except the town of Belfort, which formed a "special territory" eventually made the département of Territoire de Belfort in 1922; parts of the département of Meurthe (arrondissements of Château-Salins and Sarrebourg) and the département of Moselle, except the arrondissement of Briey, which was incorporated to the new département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, together with the parts of the former Meurthe remained French. After the return of Alsace and Moselle to France in 1919, the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle remained unchanged, the département of Meurthe was not refounded and the new département of Moselle incorporated the territories retroceded by Germany.
This was the last significant modification in the French départements, excepted a few border regularizations in the Alps in 1946.

This is a very high quality limited edition giclée print, available with or without border. It's printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper, available in standard A-sizes (A1-A4), and printed and delivered to you by The Print Space, London. Comes unframed.

The Adinkra symbols are believed to have their origin from Gyaman, a former kingdom in today’s Côte D’Ivoire. According to an Asante (Ghana) legend, Adinkra was the name of a king of the Gyaman (Nana Kofi Adinkra). Adinkra was defeated and captured in a battle by the Asantes for having copied the “Golden Stool”, which represents for them absolute power and tribal cohesion. He was finally killed and his territory annexed to the kingdom of Asante.

The Adinkra symbols express various themes that relate to the history, beliefs and philosophy of the Asante. They mostly have rich proverbial meaning since proverbs play an important role in the Asante culture. The use of Proverbs is considered as a mark of wisdom.
Other Adinkra symbols depict historical events, human behaviour and attitudes, animal behaviour, plant life forms and shapes of objects.

Adinkra also means ‘goodbye’ or ‘farewell’ in Twi the language of the Akan ethnic group of which Asante is a part. It has therefore been the tradition of the Akan, and especially the Asante, to wear cloths decorated with Adinkra symbols on important occasions such as funerals of family relations and friends. This is to signify their sorrow and to bid farewell to the deceased. Today, the Adinkra cloth is not exclusively worn by the Asante people. It is worn by other ethnic groups in Ghana on a variety of social gatherings and festive occasions.

The Adinkra symbols continue to change as new influences impact on Ghanaian culture as some of the symbols now record
specific technological developments.

New limited edition print in my Etsy shop: Emblems of the Prefectures of Japan. Available in standard A-sizes (A1-A4), unframed, printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag for a slightly softer effect.

I'm interested as an artist in maps, patterns and symbols, and what they communicate in relation to geography, geopolitics, identity and culture. These very modern designs adopted by the prefectures of Japan as their emblems have been a great source of inspiration for me. A little bit of background information on them:

There are 47 prefectures currently, which consist of 43 prefectures (県, ken) proper, two urban prefectures (府, fu, Osaka, and Kyoto), one "circuit" or "territory" (道, dō, Hokkaido) and one "metropolis" (都, to, Tokyo). The Meiji Fuhanken sanchisei administration created the first prefectures to replace the provinces of Japan in 1868.

The Japanese prefectures have beautiful translations into English:
北海道 Hokkaido (North Sea Road)

東北 Tohoku (East North):
青森 Aomori (Blue Forest); 岩手 Iwate (Rock Hand); 秋田 Akita (Autumn Rice Field); 山形 Yamagata (Mountain Shape); 宮城 Miyagi; (Palace Castle); 福島 Fukushima (Good Luck Island).

関東 Kanto (Gate East):
茨城 Ibaraki (Thorn Castle); 栃木 Tochigi (Japanese Horse Chestnut Tree); 群馬 Gunma (Herd of Horses); 埼玉 Saitama (Tip Ball); 千葉 Chiba (Thousand Leaf): 東京 Tokyo (East Capital); 神奈川 Kanagawa (God Apple River);

中部 Chubu (Central Part):
新潟 Niigata (New Lagoon); 富山 Toyama (Rich Mountain); 石川 Ishikawa (Stone River); 福井 Fukui (Good Luck Well); 山梨 Yamanashi (Mountain Pear); 長野 Nagano (Long Field); 岐阜 Gifu (Divergence Hill); 静岡 Shizuoka (Silent Hill); 愛知 Aichi (Love Wisdom).

関西 Kansai (Gate West):
三重 Mie (Triple); 滋賀 Shiga (Overgrown Congratulation); 京都 Kyoto (Capital Capital); 大阪 Osaka (Big Slope); 兵庫 Hyogo (Soldier Storage); 奈良 Nara (Apple Good); 和歌山 Wakayama (Japanese Poem Mountain).

USA State Flags Limited Edition Giclée Print in Standard A - Etsy UK 21/12/2022

My latest print has arrived!

Modern U.S. state flags date from the turn of the 20th century, when states considered distinctive symbols for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Most U.S. state flags were designed and adopted between 1893 and World War I. Recent legislation in Utah (2018–21) and Massachusetts (2021) has started the process of redesign for those state flags. The majority of the states' flags share the same design pattern consisting of the state seal superimposed on a monochrome background, commonly a shade of blue.

A limited edition giclée print, this time printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Rag paper. It's available in standard A sizes - A1, A2, A3 and A4 for ease of framing (comes unframed).

I felt like exploring how I could represent this in a different format, so here's my latest version. This one features some of the wildlife/seaside found in the Shipping Forecast areas and features some more nautical themes!

The Shipping Forecast is a BBC Radio broadcast of weather reports and forecasts for the seas around the coasts of the British Isles. It is produced by the Met Office and broadcast by BBC Radio 4 on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The waters around the British Isles are divided into 31 sea areas, also known as weather areas. There are four broadcasts per day at 00:48, 05:20, 12:01 and 17:54. In October 1859, the steam clipper Royal Charter was wrecked in a strong storm off Anglesey; 450 people lost their lives. Due to this loss, Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy introduced a warning service for shipping in February 1861, using telegraph communications. This remained the United Kingdom's Met Office primary responsibility for some time afterwards. In 1911, the Met Office began issuing marine weather forecasts which included gale and storm warnings via radio transmission for areas around Great Britain.

Japan is fascinating! I've made this map to communicate the names of the regions and prefectures of the country, which have some beautiful translations into English, for example: 北海道 Hokkaido (North Sea Road).

There are 47 prefectures currently, which consist of 43 prefectures (県, ken) proper, two urban prefectures (府, fu, Osaka, and Kyoto), one "circuit" or "territory" (道, dō, Hokkaido) and one "metropolis" (都, Tokyo). The Meiji Fuhanken sanchisei administration created the first prefectures to replace the provinces of Japan in 1868.

Maps are excellent inspiration for me as an artist. I create them to help me learn about the world; interpret historical, geographical and geopolitical information and use my growing digital skills to present that information creatively. The patterns formed through colour and shape also help my memory to retain what I learn and I enjoy the subjectivity and infinite choice in how to shape and present what I find.

Available as usual as a high quality limited edition giclée print in my Etsy shop. Standard A sizes, unframed. Printed and delivered by The Print Space, London.

09/11/2022

I've substantially re-worked an older artwork, including digitising all the tartan swatches needed to make this piece, which is more elaborate than it looks! I feel it reflects much more what I've tried to achieve in terms of creating a 'fabric' through the patterns which these tartans create when grouped within their regions of origin within Scotland. I've just listed this in my etsy shop, and it's available in standard A sizes to make it easier to frame.

My pieces are always printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Pearl paper and expertly printed and delivered by The Print Space in London - an awesome company who support artists in marketing and developing their work.

Map of the Middle East or 'Near East': Limited Edition Giclée Print available in standard sizes A1- A4.

The map features the major cities of countries considered part of the 'Middle East' (Arabic: الشرق الأوسط; ash-Sharq al-Awsat), and more specifically the 'Greater Middle East'. It also features dominant flag patterns/symbols of those countries.

The Middle East is a geopolitical region commonly encompassing Arabia (including the Arabian Peninsula and Bahrain), Asia Minor (Asian part of Turkey except Hatay Province), East Thrace (European part of Turkey), Egypt, Iran, the Levant (including Ash-Shām and Cyprus), Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), and the Socotra Archipelago (a part of Yemen). The 'Greater Middle East' additionally includes parts of East Africa, Mauritania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and sometimes Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

The history of the area dates back to ancient times, and it has been recognised as geopolitically important for millennia. Several major religions have their origins in the Middle East, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.] Arabs constitute the main socioethnic grouping in the region, followed by Turks, Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Copts, Jews, Assyrians, Iraqi Turkmen, Yazidis, and Greek Cypriots.

The term 'Middle East' came into widespread usage as a replacement of the term 'Near East' (as opposed to the 'Far East') at the beginning in the early 20th century. This has led to some confusion over its changing definitions, and has been viewed by some as discriminatory or too Eurocentric or colonialist. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918, "Near East" largely fell out of common use in English, while "Middle East" came to be applied to the re-emerging countries of the Islamic world. However, the usage "Near East" was retained by a variety of academic disciplines, including archaeology and ancient history, where it describes an area identical to the term Middle East, which is not used by these disciplines.

Some basic facts about the geography of the map: China is divided into 23 provinces, 22 of which are controlled by the People's Republic of China (PRC). The 23rd province, Taiwan, is claimed by the PRC, but it is not administered or controlled by the PRC, and is therefore a de facto independent country. Hong Kong and Macau are not provinces of China, but are called special administrative areas. Hong Kong measures 427.8 square miles (1,108 square kilometres), with Macau at 10.8 square miles (28.2 square kilometres).
