Trelleborg's Rubber Fender Disposal

The disposal of marine fenders after their service period presents a significant challenge within the industry. Their substantial size and the complexities of recycling mean that these used fenders frequently find their way into landfills. This is an unsustainable practice, as the non-biodegradable materials of the fenders continue to accumulate in the environment indefinitely.

Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure has identified an innovative facility that breaks down the entire fender using environmentally friendly methods. Through advanced technology, damaged or old fenders are inserted into a reactor where high heat separates their components. This method converts rubber into combustible oil and reusable carbon, both of which are utilized in the manufacture of other rubber products, while the steel components are reclaimed for further use.
