How awesome!

Army Tank Cake One of the last cakes I did in Vegas was an army tank cake. A friend of mine sent me a pic telling me what she wanted for her son’s birthday party. When she first told me that he wanted a tank cake…

Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the invasion landings of Normandy in World War II, commonly referred to simply as “D-Day”. Elements of four U.S. Army’s separate tank battalions participated in the initial assault waves that day. These units were equipped with both standard M4 Sherman medium tanks outfitted with wading trunks as well as Duplex-Drive (or “DD”) tanks that were designed to swim from off shore.

The battalions supporting the 4th Infantry Division on Utah Beach, the 70th and 746th Tank Battalions, were able to land en masse in relatively calm waters. Unfortunately the 741st and 743rd Tank Battalions, supporting the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions on Omaha Beach, were not as lucky. Most of the DD tanks from the 741st were lost when they were launched in heavy seas and too far from the shoreline, causing them to sink. The 743rd Tank Battalion, having been warned of the 741st’s losses, had better success getting to the shore. The tanks that did make it to the shore from the two battalions suffered heavy losses as they supported the infantry’s assault. Accounts from that day vary on whether the tanks in the first waves were successful. Major Sidney Bingham, commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 116th Infantry Regiment and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions on D-Day, gave his own verdict after the battle: “The tanks saved the day. They shot the hell out of the Germans, and got the hell shot out of them.”

This photo, from the famous surviving set taken by photographer Robert Capa, shows M4 medium tanks on Omaha Beach. Both the regular M4s (with wading trunks installed to allow them to come ashore from a landing craft) as well the Duplex-Drive tanks (equipped with canvas screens to allow them to swim in calm water) can be seen.

From Armor Historian Dr. Cameron's files, below is one of the D-D After Action Reports (AAR) from 70th Tank Battalion (Utah Beach):

1LT Edward S. Sledge II Report (A Company) 6 JUN 1944

LT Sledge of A Company landed at 0635 hours vicinity of Easy-1 with his platoon. One tank under SSG Kark destroyed just after debarking.

LT McDonough and LT Sledge tanks fire on two emplaced French 75mm guns on hill at left flank of Fox-Green. Claim credit for destruction of guns at 0715. Infantry pinned down by enemy machine gun and sniper fire from the same position. Tanks could not locate these targets from beach but could not advance due to mine fields.

Upon assault of C Company, 16th Infantry on this hill by flanking move up Easy-1 exit, 4 tanks (LT Sledge, LT McDonough, SGT Carlson, SGT Rieman) moved west on beach to cover this advance.

Tank of LT Sledge hit teller mine at this time and knocked out of action. Tank of LT McDonough hit in gas tank by 88mm and burned.

SGT Rieman's tank brought fire to bear on machine gun positions on Easy-1 exit. One DD tank under SSG Sheppard proceeded up Easy-3 exit followed by tank of SGT Carlson. DD tank destroyed and burned by 88mm located in pill box on west slope of Easy-1 exit.

Tank under SGT Carlson claims credit for silencing gun-does not believe gun completely destroyed but did not fire further. Tank of SGT Carlson threw track and temporarily put out of action. Crew evacuated tank under mortar fire.

This weekend isn’t about discounts at stores or having time off of work. We should take this time to honor those who cannot be with us because of their sacrifice and selfless service. Enjoy this weekend and share time with those you love.

This is the T9E1 Mine Exploder. It consisted of a large drum covered in spikes, connected to a Sherman via an adjustable boom. The concept was actually inspired by ground compacting rollers used in construction. The T9E1 weighed almost as much as the Sherman itself! https://tankhistoria.com/experimental/sherman-mine-clearers/

Great job guys. Now all of us will have to wear reflective vests, Kevlar, and use 4 ground guides!

If you see anything in olive drab coming your way, pray that it's driver is well trained, and it's brakes are properly maintained. 🤪 ~Clorox.
