“Chayil” - A Virtuous Woman Necklace - The woman so eloquently spoken of in the poetry of Proverbs 31:10-31 is the embodiment of all that is virtuous. From her strong moral character, her diligence at home and in her work, to her kindness, her wisdom and her reverence for God, she gives us all an example of how to live as a virtuous woman in God’s eyes. “For her worth is far above jewels”, “Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future”, “She opens her mouth in wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue”, “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”

I didn’t set out to form a woman with this piece, but once I saw her, I couldn’t “unsee” her. “Chayil” is the Hebrew word for virtuous used in Proverbs 31. This one-of-a-kind necklace was made by my own hands, my own diligent work, my own creativity as I press forward in my life as a Christian woman, doing my best to embody these same characteristics.

Hand-forged in sterling silver, her silhouette is made up of a lovely pink and red Fossilized Coral (left open on the backside so as not to hide any of its beauty). Her body is a long, slender lavender Mookaite with hints of the same bold red colors. And finally, she is clothed with a glowing scarf at her neck - an orangey red Hessonite Garnet from Mozambique, a symbol of strength and dignity.

Oxidized recesses and an old-world satin finish create a soft depth and a quiet glow. Hand-sawn ruffled edges, my maker’s mark (a symbol of the heirloom quality of my work), and a long adjustable chain complete this one-of-a-kind statement necklace. She is meant to remind you of your grace, your courage and your confidence as you live your virtuous life as unto the Lord.

Wear it as both adornment and affirmation, a tangible reflection of faith, artistry, and the sacred beauty of womanhood.

While I was moving and didn’t have access to all of my tools, I went back to my beading roots and whipped these up for an art festival. I was amazed at how my hands remembered the techniques. Glamour shots and website listings for both of these coming soon.

I’ll be at Gallery 3 in Winter Street Studios tomorrow, Saturday June 14, 12-5pm for the monthly Second Saturday event. This little beauty will be there among many other handcrafted pieces.
