Hello Artists!
My name is Georgia Fullerton and I am the founder of Durham Black Artists Collective (DBAC) and a resident of Ajax and fellow visual artist.
I must start first by saying thank you for your patience and understanding as the beginnings of DBAC started in 2014 and due to unforeseen circumstances has not resumed fully until now. Some of you have reached out to me and so I know you must be wondering what happened? Durham Region truly needs a collective of artists to represent us!
The Durham Black Artists Collective's history has been short with myself and co-founder Rob Small putting the collective on pause after successfully completing a multi-artist residency at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in 2016. This residency was accompanied by an event called The Art of Black Lives, in which an artist talk, exhibition and presentations by Toronto's BLM movement were given and received well.
Today, I am ready to unearth the collective and move things forward. I'm hoping to begin by organising meetups, where the process of membership will be discussed as well as a way for us to get to know each other and see who our African, Caribbean, and Black artists are that reside in Durham Region.
For now I will send out a calendly meeting poll to get an idea of how soon we can all meet. This can be virtual or in person, which will also be a detail of the poll.
Kindly make your selections and we can get our first meetup underway! If you have any questions, please ask. Don't forget...if you know any African, Caribbean or Black visual artists residing/working in Durham Region who might be interested in joining the collective, please share this information.
