One of the biggest student-run Chinese Martial Arts tournaments in the Western Hemisphere, 2017 marked the event's 25th anniversary (CMAT 25), making this also one of the longest-running events of its kind in North America. CMAT 25 was also chosen to host the qualifier for the first-ever inclusion of Wushu and Taijiquan in the Universiade. Also known as the World University Games, it is the second largest multi-sport event in the world, second only to the Olympics. It is overseen by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), not the IOC, and has been officially held since 1959, with a history of pre-cursor events that goes back to 1923. The 23th Universiade will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, and modern wushu has been officially accepted as an event for the first time. (For more information please check out www.teamusawushu.com.) Competitors of all ages will be able to compete in a wide array of Chinese Martial Arts at CMAT. Divisions will be separated into 3 main categories: Contemporary Wushu, Traditional Kungfu, and Internal Martial Arts. Some of the sights for families and friends to observe include but are not limited to Chang Quan (long fist), Nan Quan (southern fist), Taijiquan, Xing Yi, Bagua, Taiji pushhands (tui sho), and many more. There will also be various weapons set competitions in all three divisions.
