Singapore approves drug to treat late-stage breast cancer in patients with inherited genetic mutation 20/05/2019

Today is international clinical trials day! Clinical trials play an important part in the continual improvement of healthcare and treatments. In a recently article, the Health Sciences Authority has recently approved a drug, Olaparib for treating late-stage breast cancer patients with a rare genetic mutation. This has been the result of numerous studies in the behaviour of breast cancer, particularly around the BRCA mutation. Now that this drug has been approved to treat advanced breast cancer, there will be continual studies on its effectiveness.

This is one of thousands of examples of how clinical trials and research can change the way cancer is treated, opening more opportunities and increasing survivorship.

The Wish is a Channel 5 TV series that features stories of real people being who have been affected by serious health conditions who are able to see their wish come true.

In this episode, a young Joseph Lee was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010 which has impaired his sight and balance. Soon after his grandma was also diagnosed with cancer. Joseph told his grandma that when they both got well they would go together to Hokkaido for a vacation. Sadly, Joseph's grandmother passed away before they could make the trip. The Dreammaker team alongside his personal doctor, Dr Choo Bok Ai helped grant Joseph's wish to travel to Hokkaido to honour his late grandma.

Remember, detecting cancer early is key, so it is important to have regular screening. You obtain a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) to detect early stages of cancer, and/or a colonoscopy - a safe procedure that involves the examination of the colon and re**um. Regular screening can detect cancer early which will increase chances of survival and prevent invasive cancer from occurring.
