THE ORIGIN OF SISAL FIBRE SKIRTS IN LUO COMMUNITY
The Sisal Skirt was adopted in Luo community after the coming of the Portuguese traders in the East Coast of African by 15th Century.
The Portuguese brought with them Sisal nodules for plantation amongst other cash crops. After few decades the Sisal reach the Kenyan Inland to the Lake region.
This is the time Luos in Kenya and Uganda living along the lake region and river Nile started using the Sisal fibres in place of twined papyrus backs to make skirts.
Initially, before the coming of the current multicolour dyes, the skirts were coloured using earth colours extracted from back of trees, shrubs, flowers and ores.
