Comments

Sit back and relax with some refreshing Sparkling Water from Wilson's Orchard & Farm and some fresh and tasty crackers from Smokehouse Crackers!

Wilson's Orchard & Farm, a short trip off Hwy 1 north of Iowa City, is a “you-pick” orchard with a growing event space, featuring Thursday Night Farm Sessions (with musicians like Little Village art director Jordan Sellergren), yoga nights and weddings. There are sunflower festivals, tulip festivals and pumpkin festivals.

It is also the winner of the 2022 Best of the CRANDIC award for Best Local Farm.

Next year, Wilson’s will expand beyond Iowa City, adding a new 115-acre location in Des Moines, owner Paul Rasch announced in October. Like its Iowa City counterpart, the new location will have a seasonal farm market, bakery, cider bar and restaurant. But these buildings will be combined into one facility with a large indoor and outdoor seating area, and it will also produce hard cider.
I am curious; is the Energy Seltzer available? I can't find it at Hy-Vee.
Thank you to The Graduate Hotel for hosting a wonderful Holiday Cocktail Connect last week. The turnout was great, and we had a wonderful time celebrating holiday cheer within our community. The Graduate generously provided drink tickets, appetizers, and delicious dried apple chips from Wilson's Orchard & Farm . Thank you to Adam Kahler and Allison Hoflen for helping prepare and hosting this great event. If you are looking for event space options, they have many accommodating spaces to check out!

Our next month's cocktail connection will be on January 11th at Bump's Restaurant (Finkbine Golf Course) from 5-6pm. Register Here: https://member.iowacityarea.com/eventcalendar/Details/iowa-city-cocktail-connections-812417?sourceTypeId=Website

We know Small Business Saturday was technically yesterday, but we’re here for Support a Band Sunday!

Here’s how it works…

Many bands (including BNTB!) are registered small businesses, and we work with a lot of other really incredible small business owners! When you buy our cds, come to our shows, like and share our posts on social media, and tell your favorite venues about us - all of this helps us to book more gigs and, in turn, helps us to support other small businesses.

Also, when you support other small businesses by, you guessed it, buying their products, showing up, telling your friends about it, and sharing their posts on social media, you help them (and they, in turn, can then hire bands like us)!

Here are some of our favorite places - some old, some new. Be sure to check them out this season!

Iowa:
Wilson's Orchard & Farm
Shakespeare's Pub And Grill
The James Theater
Raven Wolf Productions
Corked 101
Tellurian Brewing
Kalona Brewing Company
Horan's Cabaret Irish Pub
Jameson's Public House & Restaurant
Fiddle & Whistle Irish Pub
Little Swan Lake Winery and Bed and Breakfast

Minnesota:
Patrick's on Third
Forager Brewery

Illinois:
Bishop Hill Creative Commons
Cerno's Bar and Grill
Frank O'Dowds Irish Pub

Indiana:
Fiddler's Hearth (we haven’t been yet, but we hear they are great. So great that we’ll be checking them out in just a couple weeks!)

Also let’s give a shout-out to some of the other businesses that we encounter - like the photographers at Twisted Cedar Studios or the staff at Little Village Mag!

And last but certainly not least - don’t forget some of the other amazing bands and performers (like Champagne Academy of Irish Dance, Cedar County Cobras, Coppers and Brass, A Rogue Wave) that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting and playing alongside - be sure to support them, too!

Due to the weather conditions we have decided to close our Farm Market and Bakery today (the 22nd) and tomorrow (the 23rd).

We will be open Saturday the 24th from 9am-noon, and then we will reopen next Wednesday for our normal winter hours.

As long as the snow holds, we will start offering snowshoe and sled rentals (we do not rent cross-country skis, but guests are permitted to bring their own). Our ice skating rink is not quite ready, we will update when we have a confirmed opening date.

For anyone who ordered a Christmas meal kit, our team will be in communication, we are recommending to move the pickups to Saturday morning, since the weather will clear up then, if that doesn't work please let them know when they reach out and we will coordinate another option.

Hope that everyone stays safe!

21/12/2022

*Rink Update*
We’ve been getting lots of questions about our ice skating rink. Our farm team has been working hard the past couple of days to get things moving. Of course, opening date depends on Mother Nature. We are finished freezing the first layer of ice and have a couple more to go before things are all set. Further updates coming soon!

A reminder that Santa Clause will be visiting the farm from noon to 4pm today and tomorrow!

He is coming to visit us directly from the North Pole (last week he had to go back to his workshop). We just received word that he is crossing the Canadian border and picking up speed, we're not sure if it is because of the warmer weather this side of the border, or maybe Santa just doesn't like Canada quite as much?

It's a great time to visit our Holiday Market! We are now offering five different varieties of fresh cut Christmas trees (variety, size, and pricing info above), as well as wreaths, ornaments, seasonal decor, gifts, and other seasonal items.

Apart from a handful of Fraser Firs we started selling a few weeks ago, the remaining 500+ trees were harvested earlier this week; they look and smell amazing!

Real Christmas trees do require a little more work for set up and clean up, but anyone who has gone through the process of picking the perfect tree, and experienced the atmosphere and aroma that they add to a home knows that it is more than worth it!

Our Future

It’s been quite a year. Our’s is a business rooted in the vagaries of weather, so we’re used to freezes (2012), drought (2013), floods (2008) and rain soaked Falls that keep customers away (2019). But this pandemic brings a whole raft of new challenges to our farm.

More importantly, COVID 19 has revealed the soft underbelly of our food system and underscores the need to build a more resilient agriculture. As a fourth generation farmer, I grew up in a monoculture fruit farm. Unlike my grandfather’s day, there were no animals in the picture, no vegetables, no pasture -- only acre after acre of fruit trees. Just like a corn/bean operation here in Iowa. I have seen first hand the fragility of that system, both economically and environmentally. A lot of family and friends that I grew up with are now gone from farming, their land swallowed up by ever larger, centralized operations.

This pandemic has had an impact on agricultural businesses for sure. But well before we heard of coronaviruses, agriculture was in a bad way. Too much production of too few crops. High input costs and environmental degradation. Cheap food that ships well, but has little nutrition or flavor. Consolidation of meat packers. The list goes on. When there is not enough meat in supermarkets and animals are being euthanized on farms by the thousands, we should all be wondering “what is wrong with this picture?”. And doing something about it.

This is not a new problem and we have been thinking and working on solutions on our farm for some time. Our vision is a farming operation that actively works to regenerate the soil and rebuild the connection between people and the land their food comes from.
