Early childhood education took a significant step backwards this week when Alabama Governor Kay Ivey removed her director of early childhood education, Dr. Barbara Cooper, after she distributed NAEYC's Developmentally Appropriate Practice Book to state run preK programs. This book rightly includes recognition of the negative impact of racism and bias on children's development and the importance of culturally responsive teaching practices. Dr. Cooper's removal signals just how alive structural racism is.
You can read more about this unconscionable dismissal in the links in comments.
Please take two minutes to take a stand for the vital importance of dismantling structural racism and inclusion of culturally responsive, anti-racist teaching practices in the classroom.
We urge you to sign on to the statement of support as an individual, an organization, or both. The letter will be published in one week so please sign as soon as possible.

An absolute abomination. Governor Ivey of Alabama removed Barbara Cooper as the Director of Early Childhood Education over the use of the NAEYC Developmentally Appropriate Practice Book... Which includes anti racist and culturally responsive education standards.
Alabama governor ousts education director over book's stance on racism, inclusion Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Friday announced she replaced her director of early childhood education over the use of a teacher training book that the Republican governor denounced as teaching “woke concepts" because of language about inclusion and structural racism.
