General information

The changing socioeconomics conditions and growing instability and dependency of the region have been the driving force that fueled this sustainable community effort.

• Yap, FSM currently relies heavily on the aid received from the US through the compact of free association agreement that was established in 1986, and revised in 2004 to extend through 2023.
• Many Yapeses have grown accustomed to the luxuries that cash paying government jobs have provided, and most good cash paying jobs on the island are government affiliated, many of which will be cut off when the grants are eliminated in 2023.
• The elimination of US grants assistance will be devastating to Yapese citizens that have been relying heavily on them, unless they are able to relearn the subsistent survival skills that their ancestors used for centuries.
