We want to give a big shoutout to our keynote speaker, Marsalis Smith. He graduated from UNCP in 2014 with a BS in Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Marsalis is a RISE alumni and was a member of Tri-Beta. We were delighted to welcome him back to tell us about his journey to grad school as well as his current research.

Meet Josh Cade, one of our RISE fellows, spent his summer in Bethesda, Maryland at an NIH internship studying Genotype-Phenotype Correlations in Parkinson's disease.

Here are two more of our RISE fellows:
Erica Baynard (pictured left) and Jessica Dean (pictured right) both spent their summer interning at Wake Forest University. Erica focused her studies on the impact of individual cell compartment oxidation on lipid raft formation. Jessica's studies focused on studying Biomarker CD117: An indicator for prostate cancer recurrence and metastasis

This year fourteen RISE Fellows and two staff members traveled to Indianapolis, IN for ABRCMS 2018. We had eight students present research (one oral presentation and seven posters). As usual ABRCMS was a hit! Lots of giveaways and good connections. See you next year, in San Francisco, ABRCMS!

Dr. Jamila Simpson, Interim Associate Dean and Assistant Dean of the College of Science at NCSU, was our guest speaker at our meeting on 10/10/18. She gave an awesome presentation about the importance of diversity in STEM. "If you are not in the room who will ask your questions?"

Yesterday was the first day of class and the first RISE meeting of Fall 2018. We broke the ice with the new cohort by asking the students when they first realized they wanted to be a scientist. Many were inspired by the passion and love for science of their teachers and professors. When did you first realize you wanted to be a scientist?
