1949 HITS ARCHIVE: Again - Doris Day 15/02/2023

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW (AND THE REST OF THE TIME, AS WELL):

My standard operating procedure is to look to the past for ideas, inspiration and feeling, and while I’m not a huge Doris Day fan, I think this track is amazing. Doris Day was a formidable vocalist before she was a blockbuster movie star, and while her recordings never moved me very much, this one does.

Take a listen. How did they make it so warm sounding? Answer: ribbon mics, studio placements and analog tape. The simplicity makes it accessible. It sounds real and emotional and human. No matter how many times corporations today tell me they can recreate this sound using digital technology and computers (new recordings made “in the box”), they cannot. They can only mimic the real thing and try to sell their imitator stuff. No, thank you.

Sometimes I think I’m the only person on the planet who is actually feeling music. Super Bowl half-time shows, Netflix hype and churned out music industry garbage makes me turn inward even more; rescued by timeless classics that still quietly speak to the human condition, like this Doris Day recording. I honestly don’t know what I would do without them.

Alas, the city of Seattle has also drastically changed in the past few decades. I'd give anything to turn back the clock, including enduring another dust-up with Officer Muse in 1995.

(My kind and sensitive friend Michael Golden pointed out that I'm wearing a "Canadian Tuxedo" in this photo. Thanks...?)

Redbone ~ Come and Get Your Love (1973) 04/08/2022

The perfect radio hit (when radio was actually something). Notice how new elements are continually introduced to keep the listener engaged and singing along. Genius and effortless. My favorite parts are all the string movements on the third and fourth verses. 70's pop music strings were awesome.

Redbone ~ Come and Get Your Love (1973) "Come and Get Your Love" is a song by Native American rock band Redbone. The song was originally released as a promo track under the name "Hail"…

I'm Glad There Is You 28/03/2022

What I’m listening to RIGHT NOW:
The presence of this vocal is a HUGE part of why I find this recording so appealing. Notice how the word “world” is captured and mixed in the very first line. Intimate. I think this closeness keeps the listener engaged until the end. Well, that, and the fact that Smokey Robinson is a living legend.

My friend and Indigo Swing bandmate “Big Jim” Overton passed away around this time 20 years ago.

In the years we toured, recorded and performed together, I was too young to appreciate the complete understanding he had of himself, his life and music. He had been through a lot and come out the other side with grace and gratitude. I understand now.

Sometimes, when things become overwhelming, I try to imagine what Jim would do. I always come back to his mantra: find a balance. Try to let go of the things that don’t bring you joy. Find your place. Realize that it’s not all about “you”. Perspective. Accept your faults and love yourself anyway.

For Jim, he was happiest making music hidden behind the drums. He didn’t want all the attention that so many performers crave. Humble and grounded, he helped the rest of us shine. You can hear it in the recordings we made together.

I miss Jim and all the things I had left to learn from him, but I will never forget the example he set for me and everyone else lucky enough to have him in their lives.

Rest in peace, Jim.

Nat King Cole I Just Can't See For Lookin' 29/08/2021

It's been said that Nat King Cole was the finest piano accompanist in history. What's even more amazing is how he accompanied himself while singing in a such relaxed style. The piano was played in time, the singing, behind the beat. It boggles the mind how someone could be that talented.

I recently discovered this song from NKC's trio recording days. His band, as always, is pure perfection. "Perfection" not only in the sense of the musical ex*****on, but also completely open and accessible for others to listen and enjoy. They set the bar, and in my opinion, it remains unmatched to this day. Check it out:

We're All Alone 05/08/2021

I've posted about Boz Scaggs here before and continue to appreciate his (in my opinion) highly underrated talent. Incredible songwriter and one-of-a-kind voice. Listen to the range that a vocalist must possess to sing this song! Ridiculous. Yet, Boz Scaggs attempts it, and as he reaches earnestly for the high notes, we find ourselves rooting for him to succeed:

"Come on, come on...it's so beautiful! You can do it!"

This is the connection that Scaggs creates with listeners using his unique voice and songs. It transcends far beyond music and deep into our own humanity. It's magical. Lucky, lucky us.

Frank Sinatra - Emily 30/07/2021

Probably my all-time favorite string arrangement. + the French horns. Instantly transforms me to a place of beauty and calm. When Sinatra sang tenderly, nothing else mattered. Listen to the soft "catches" in his voice at the end of the phrases. Wow.

Be My Number Two

BRAND NEW MUSIC!
From a forthcoming album of broken-hearted love songs. I have always admired this Joe Jackson tune from younger days...and now I get to sing it 😊

Produced by Dave Palmer, recorded by Jim Monroe and mixed by Jason Mariani (Brotheryn Studios). Beautiful backing vocals by Perla Batalla, Gabriel Gonzalez and James Zavaleta. And that's Jordan Katz...one incredible trumpet virtuoso.

I feel so lucky. I hope you like 😊

Young and Foolish - Bill Henderson with the Oscar Peterson Trio

What I'm listening to RIGHT NOW:
I arrived home this evening from a successful show in Thousand Oaks, CA.
I thought of this song and spun it.
My instinct was trying to tell me something.
I learned a lot from that show.
This is the understated beauty and honesty and elegance I want in my music. This is the music I want to write and create.
I will continue...
