When we were in South Dakota for my niece’s wedding, my sister took us rock climbing.

The kids all did amazing and made it look easy. Then I was my turn and let me tell you, it was NOT easy. I made it about ¾ of the way up the rock and then I got completely stuck. It had been fun and exhilarating. Until it wasn’t. My arms were tired. My legs were tired. I couldn’t see anywhere to move, anywhere to step or grab. I was clinging to the side of a rock and I had no idea what to do next. It felt impossible.

I wanted to give up, to sit back on my harness and let my nephew below lower me back down, even though I hadn’t reached the top.

And I probably would have. But my sister wouldn’t let me.
She climbed right up there on the rock next to me, told me I could do it and that she wasn’t letting me give up. She told me exactly where to move each hand and foot to take the next step, and kept pushing me and encouraging me until I finally moved one foot one small step. And then a hand. And another foot. Thanks to her, I kept going. Partly because deep down I really did want to make it to the top to enjoy that incredible view, and partly because there was no way she was going to let me give up.

Her experience allowed her to see the path even though I couldn’t, and her confidence helped me believe I could do it even when it seemed impossible.

I see this exact same process over and over with my clients’ health goals.

We have a vision of how we want to feel and experience life and in the beginning we’re so motivated. We can see the top of the mountain, that reward of reversing dis-ease and reclaiming glowing vibrant health. We’re moving towards the goal, taking action, doing well, so proud of ourselves. But then—we get stuck. We have a setback or we hit an obstacle that feels like an immovable rock wall. We don’t know what the next steps are or even how to make one more small step forward. We lose confidence and that vision of a Vibrant Life that felt so real we could see, smell and taste it, now seems impossible.
We want to quit. And if we’re on our own, with no coaching or support, we usually do.

We give up in frustration, assuring ourselves this is all completely normal. We’re fine. We can live with these extra 20 lbs, or the fatigue, or the pain, stress, anxiety or depression, or digestive issues or whatever it is.

We sometimes even tell ourselves that the mountain top doesn't really exist, no one really has that level of Vibrant Wellness that we foolishly believed in when we set those goals. Or at least WE don't, maybe other people can experience the top of the mountain but it’s just not realistic for US.

We should just be more grateful; we really are so blessed. We need to just learn to be content where we are and keep a positive attitude about it.

Sound familiar?

BUT when you have a coach—someone like my sister who has done this many times before and climbed right up that rock beside me, told me I could do it and that she wasn’t letting me give up, and then guided my hands and feet to exactly where they needed to go to make each small but persistent step forward … it makes all of the difference.

When I leaned on HER expertise and confidence, it turned out I COULD make it to the top of that rock.

Yesterday during my chat with Linda Downey, I mentioned something called the Accountability Ladder (you can still go listen if you missed that!)

This is my spin on it.

As we head into 2024 (and 12 days in, many of us are already giving up on our New Year's resolutions), this is an amazing way to re-evaluate where you are and where you want to be.

This is often used in a corporate context to assess where employees or team members are. But it is SO Much More Powerful for each of us to assess where WE personally are, in each area of our life, and move towards radical responsibility for where we are and where we want to be. THAT's where the massive growth is. THAT's where we create the incredibly beautiful health, relationships and life experience we all want to have.

So here's what you do:

Think about your health, your marriage or intimate relationship, your parenting, other relationships, your finances, your professional/work life and your mission or where you find your purpose and fulfillment (feel free to add other areas!) ... No shame or blame or self-judgment. Just be completely honest with yourself about where you are on this ladder for each area.

It may be different for different areas. Many of us take radical responsibility for our professional life or for our children and parenting, but less so in our health or our marriages, for example. Then decide what you need to do to move up the ladder and get to Level 8 in each area.

Happy New Years, friends! After a wonderful break with my family, I am so excited to get back to work today!!

A few months ago, I wrote a social media post suggesting birth control and anti-depressants are NOT the only way.

These are SUCH common responses to struggles of exhaustion, weight gain, inflammation, difficult menstrual cycles, anxiety and depression. But if this is all your doctor is offering, I suggest you find someone who can help you understand WHY your symptoms are happening in the first place. Someone who will help you restore balance, health and vitality rather than just covering up these symptoms with medications that come with their own risks and side effects and, over the long term, can CAUSE the very things they are supposed to be helping with.

That post got some push back. (Including from two very close, personal friends who I love dearly.)

I was in no way judging or shaming anyone for seeking help with mental health issues or for choosing to take an anti-depressant. Medication is sometimes necessary and life saving.

But I talk to women every single day who Don't Want medication. They want to understand WHY they are exhausted, inflammed, gaining weight and struggling with depression or anxiety or both (often along with digestive issues, skin issues, miserable menstrual cycles and other complaints) and FIX it.

And I'm here to tell you, this is 100% possible -- Even If You Think You Have Tried Everything.

Even if you have read all of the books and listened to all of the podcasts.

Even if you have tried eating healthier, exercising and DIY supplement regimens. Maybe you've even worked with a functional practitioner and spent thousands on (often unnecessary) testing and been sent home with a bag of expensive supplements.

>> If you haven't found someone with a proven system who has helped several hundred women make lasting changes to reverse their symptoms naturally and wean off medications because they no longer needed them.

>> If you haven't worked with someone who will meet with you every other week (and sometimes every week!), is available to answer ALL of your questions personally and support you through your struggles in real time as they arise, is as invested in your health as you are and will be there with you every step of the way until you have achieved your goals and created the health and life experience you want to have.

Then you haven't tried everything yet.

With all 4 our of kiddos birthdays the beginning of November and then heading straight into Thanksgiving and Christmas, it can be easy for November 1 through the end of the year just flies by in a blur.

So I started being very intentional about how I want to experience this special time of year.

Today is my birthday! And the best gift you could give to me, to yourself, to your loved ones and the world is to look within. Observe what is going on in your body and mind with neutral, non-judgmental curiosity.

No shame or blame.
No defensiveness.
Just breathe deeply and observe.

🔥 Is your body calling out for you to care for her better? What is one thing you can do today to care for her well?

✨Where are you still sitting back waiting for the magic pill or someone in a white coat to fix it for you rather than being empowered to do the work to change your own health and life?

🌟 Where are you blaming others for where you are and not taking full responsibility?

☀️ Do you have beliefs about your health, your life, the people around you or the world that are no longer serving you?

☔️ Do you have unprocessed trauma that has been stored in your cells and is creating stress and dis/ease in your body? (I can tell you, most of us do! And it is a huge factor in chronic disease)

🌎 Are your thoughts in alignment with what you want to create in your life? (If not, consciously choose to shift them! Set the intention for how you want to feel, how you want to show up in the world, what you want to create, every day. This is some of the work we do in Stressed to Zen)

🍁 Do you need to let go of control, perfectionism or create healthier boundaries in order to rethink are your nervous system? (More of the work we do in Stressed to Zen!)

THIS is really what it all boils down to. ⤵️⤵️

It’s very basic health math. When toxic exposure/intake exceeds the capacity of the body to break down and excrete toxins, the result is toxicity in the body leading to disease.

The fewer nutrients we're bringing on board to support our bodies in being well, the harder time we have dealing with the toxins.

Almost every single chronic health condition on the planet is, at its root, the result of a combination of toxicity in the body (ie too much of the bad stuff) along with not enough nourishment to the cells to help our detoxification systems, our immune system, our nervous system perform optimally and keep us feeling energized and amazing.

It really is that simple.

So we have to:

✨ Maximize the things our body needs to be Vibrantly Well. Real nutrient dense whole food. Restful restorative sleep. Fun. Faith. Connected supportive relationships.

✨ Minimize the things that are harming us. Toxic chemicals. Emotional stress. Leaky boundaries.

In the Whole Food Makeover in January and February, we worked on increasing the nourishment every cell in our body needs to function optimally AND reducing processed, crap foods that are low in nutrients and high in toxic stressors.

Starting next week, in Vibrant Life in a Toxic World, we’re digging into the next layer of toxic stressors beyond our food choices. We're going to be reducing and releasing all of these toxins that are harming us AND supporting our crucial detoxification pathways.

These are the foundations for health and healing.

Small but mighty. And it matters greatly to your health!

Did you know there's a strong connection between toxicity, liver health and cardiovascular health?

The liver synthesizes LDL and HDL and sends them out to do their job in the body. Like most things in our bodies, we need these things to be in the perfect Goldilocks sweet spot. Not too much, not too little, but "just right".

Even the so called "bad" LDL is necessary for our health. LDL acts as a transporter to carry critical passengers around the body. Things like cholesterol (necessary to make s*x and adrenal hormones, make bile to digest fats, build healthy cell membranes and convert sunshine to Vitamin D), triglycerides, fat soluble vitamins (A, D, K and E) and CoQ10 ...

A healthy, functioning liver makes optimal amounts of each. So if cholesterol or other markers of cardiovascular health are off (too high or too low), one important thing to look at is the health of the liver.

It's pretty remarkable just how many different functions and health concerns are impacted by toxicity in the body and an overwhelmed, sluggish, damaged or fatty liver.

We're going to be taking a close look at the many ways the liver serves and supports our health and how WE can serve and support the health and vitality of this critical detoxification organ in my new group program beginning April 3.

Autoimmune disease does not arise in a vacuum. You are not fine one day and the next day diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease.

These dynamics arise over many months and years. And if we are tuned into our body and viewing these symptoms as messages from our human partner that we need to listen to, we can take action BEFORE they rise to the level of a diagnosable autoimmune disease OR reverse them before there is permanent organ damage or we add even more autoimmune diagnoses.
If you already have one autoimmune disease, you probably know that you are at 3x greater risk of developing a second and third. This is because autoimmunity isn't a disease of the affected body part. It's an imbalance of the immune system. And when the immune system is out of balance and hyper-vigilant, it is likely going to continue to find new "victims" or affect new areas of your body. **UNLESS you take intentional and concerted action to soothe the immune system and bring it back into balance and health.**

I view immune function and autoimmunity as a "spectrum". In the middle of the spectrum is the place of balance, tolerance and Vibrant Wellness. This is where our immune systems are appropriately primed and vigilant, but not overly vigilant. In this place we feel amazing, have plenty of energy and zero unwanted symptoms.

At the right end of the spectrum, we have suppressed immunity. This is where we catch every cold or flu that goes around or we struggle with chronic EBV, Lyme or other infections.
At the other end, we have one or more diagnosed autoimmune diseases. But in between the healthy balanced immune system and diagnosed autoimmunity, there is a whole range of symptoms ... fatigue, pain, inflammation, skin issues, digestive issues ... that all place you on the autoimmune spectrum headed towards autoimmune disease.

The farther along this side of the spectrum you are, the more important it becomes for you to take action. The sooner you take intentional action to address these chronic symptoms, the more likely you are to be successful in completely and reversing them and avoiding an autoimmune diagnosis (or putting your autoimmunity into full remission).

What is food to you?

A source of nourishment & nutrients?
Security (abundance)?
A source of Pleasure?
Simply a necessity?
A Source of Comfort or Numbing?
A challenge or burden that you have to deal with every day?
A source of Shame or Judgment?

We all have to eat to live. And our relationships with the food we eat are so amazingly deep and complex. An amalgamation of our genetics, history, experience, associations, expectations, assumptions, preferences and biological needs that all evolve over time.

Our food choices are a root cause of Vibrant Wellness AND often a root cause of dis-ease and disease. And an absolutely critical piece of every health puzzle. My goal is Vibrant Wellness for a lifetime. Vibrant wellness so all encompassing that dis-ease simply can't co-exist with it.

I really don't worry about any of the circulating bugs, or cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers, heart disease or anything else. I'm focused on creating a terrain that is incompatible with those things.

And the very first layer is what you are fueling your body with every day.

You wouldn't put gatorade in the gas tank of your car and expect it to go very far or serve you very well for very long. If you tried it, just as an experiment, you know you'd end up stranded by the side of the road pretty quickly.

And yet we put toxic fake "food" in our bodies and we don't understand why she is tired and sick and doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone or can't procreate or our immune system is hyper-vigilant and creating allergies, asthma or autoimmunity.

And then instead of deciding to fuel her well and care for her in the ways she is asking for, we continue to give her fake "food" and throw some pharmaceuticals on top that aren't going to solve the problem.
