In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, I painted a piece titled "Zaw Taught Me How to Draw,” now temporarily gracing the walls of . I know it’s a late post, but feeling a huge honor to be hung in I felt an urge to share a bit about this creation. The artwork is a tribute, encapsulating a snippet from KRS One's self-titled album, echoing lyrics from “OUT FOR FAME,” an ode to the influential figures in my life - my father and the Teacha himself.

The spark that drove me to embrace the pencil was ignited by the old drawings and sketches of my father, a treasure trove I later discovered to be extensions from his blackbooks. Unveiling a past, I learned of ‘Zaw,’ the alias my father adopted during his days of etching graffiti onto the heart of New York in the 80s. Amidst a life of transient shelter, a profound friendship blossomed between him and Kris. Their camaraderie, intertwined with art, became instrumental in shaping BDP's graffiti narrative.

The intricacies of their journey remain veiled, the complete story isn’t mine to narrate. Yet, the echoes of Hip Hop and the heritage of artistry in my life is a melodious ode I owe to the discovery of those sketches. “Zaw taught me how to draw,” a simple yet profound statement, reflecting a lineage of inspiration that has taken me through the rollercoaster of this artistic voyage. The ripples created by those initial sketches are akin to the beats of Hip Hop, continuously shaping my world. Where would I be, what would I be delving into had those sketches remained shadows of the past? The contemplation of this serendipity is as evocative as the strokes that now define my artwork. So, make sure to go check out , where every stoke was made with a can on this canvas is a note in my symphony of gratitude towards Hip Hop, my father, and the endless horizons of expression they unveiled before me.
