The Times-Mail asked each County Council Candidate a few questions.

Here are the questions with my answers plus a short biography:

#1: What do you foresee as being the biggest challenge facing Lawrence County in the coming four years? How would you address it?

The biggest issue I see is the rising cost of the entire Justice system, police, courts and public defenders. It is growing at an alarming rate. This is primarily driven by drugs and drug related crimes. It is apparent that the current level of punishment is not enough of a deterrent to slow this unlawful behavior. More stringent actions need to be enacted.

#2: If you received a $1 million grant to use for the county any way you wanted, what would you do with it and why?

I would say a program to benefit the good productive young people who are not a burden on society to excel. We spend millions on troubled youth but virtually nothing on the majority of kids.

#3: What contribution of service to your community are you most proud of and how do you feel that experience would potentially aid you as a county council member?

I have served as an elder at my Church and on various business boards. I have been a dairy farmer and businessman with multiple employees for 30 years. My experience will allow me to bring a moral fiscally responsible viewpoint to County Government.

#4: Briefly explain why you feel you are the strongest candidate for this role.

As a retired person I have the time commitment combined with 30 years of business experience to oversee a lean, efficient, least cost budget process that should serve the county well.

#5: A significant project currently in development is the push to bring more broadband access to Lawrence County. In what ways do you think expanded broadband services will help the county?

Expanded broadband coverage will allow job opportunities to increase allowing people to work from home as we transition away from our traditional manufacturing base. It will also assist students enrolled in online college as well as home schooled students to access the world’s knowledge.

My wife Paula and I are retired dairy farmers and businesspeople. We have two children, Andy McKnight and spouse Liz, Laurin Perry and spouse Josh, who are both business owners and taxpayers in the County. My view of the role of Councilman is to be the fiscal guardian of County Government, to assist department heads to streamline and economize their respective budgets, to stop the continued budgetary growth and Government overreach we as taxpayers see with each budget cycle. This type of management will require a time commitment that I as retired person will be able to attack with a level of tenacity and vigor to do the best job of serving the citizenry seldom seen in Government in these times.
I want to thank you for your consideration in this primary election and encourage you to vote. It is our most sacred right as Americans.

Thank you.

Jeff McKnight

I enjoyed listening to the other candidates at The Farm Bureau Forum on Thursday night.
For those who missed it, here is the speech I gave:

Good evening. For those who don’t know me my name is Jeff McKnight, and I am a candidate for Lawrence County Council in the first district. My wife Paula and I are retired dairy farmers and businesspeople. We have two children, Andy McKnight and spouse Liz, Laurin Perry and spouse Josh, who are both business owners and taxpayers in the County.

My view of the role of Councilman is to be the fiscal guardian of County Government to assist department heads to streamline and economize their respective budgets, to stop the continued budgetary growth and Government overreach we as taxpayers see with each budget cycle. I won’t stand here and tell you that I have all the answers, but I can promise you that I will educate myself and seek the answer to whatever the issue to provide the best solution available.

This type of management will require a time commitment that I as a retired person will be able to attack with a high level of tenacity and vigor to achieve the most cost-effective outcome for Lawrence County taxpayers.

I realize I have not used my allotted time, but I like to economize my words much like I’ll do with your tax dollars as Councilman. I want to thank you all for attending the forum and encourage you to vote. It is our most sacred right as Americans.

Thank you.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Jeff McKnight.

I am a lifelong resident of Lawrence County, a semi-retired farmer and business owner.
My wife is Paula Tolbert McKnight. We have 2 children: son Andy McKnight and his wife Liz; and a daughter Laurin and husband Josh Perry. We also have six grandchildren.

I want to serve as Lawrence County Commissioner of the 2nd District because I feel my familiarity with business matters could be a real asset to county government. I will be able to look at the issues we face in the coming year with a different perspective and a fresh set of eyes. With less revenue expected, changes will need to be made. My guiding principle will be to limit government growth and it’s impact on our daily lives while still maintaining necessary functions of county government.

Let’s work together to keep Lawrence County on the right path.

Vote!

Thanks for your consideration in the upcoming election.
