Niagara Falls is often seen as the last stop along the Underground Railroad before crossing to freedom in Canada, but this wasn't always the case.
-
While many freedom seekers fled north by land, routes by water were common. Completed in 1825, the Erie Canal connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. The 360 mile long canal provided quick access along the Underground Railroad to the Niagara Region, and the goal of crossing into Canada.
-
Many freedom seekers initially settled along the relatively safe canal area. However, after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, these settlers were now at risk of bounty hunters finding them and forcing them back into enslavement.
-
Safe houses in places like Lockport served as stations for these brave freedom seekers as they made their way through the Niagara Frontier, and hopefully, freedom across the border.

・・・
Black history month is about so much more than sharing stories of Black exceptionalism.
[Image description: a tweet from Dante Stewart reading, "Black people should not have to be perfect to stay alive, be seen, and be loved. Black History Month is not just telling stories of how we have been "exceptional". It is about embracing the fullness of our lives and creating a world where we are free to be human."]
