5 Fun Facts About Bison from Big Balls Ranch
1. Bison Are the Largest Land Mammal in North America
Adult males, called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, while females (cows) can weigh around 1,000 pounds. Despite their size, they are surprisingly agile and can run up to 35 miles per hour!
2. They Shed Their Coats in Spring
Each year, bison shed their thick winter coats to stay cool during the warmer months. You’ll often see them rubbing against trees or rocks to help the process along.
3. Bison Were Once Nearly Extinct
By the late 1800s, bison populations dwindled to less than 1,000 due to overhunting. Thanks to conservation efforts, there are now over 500,000 bison in North America today!
4. Calves Are Born Reddish-Orange
Known as “red dogs,” baby bison are born with a reddish hue, which helps them blend into the grasslands. Around two months old, their fur starts to darken to the iconic brown color of adult bison.
5. Bison Are Great Swimmers
With their powerful muscles, bison can cross rivers and streams with ease. Their thick fur also helps them stay buoyant while they swim.

we’re officially 4 days away from the bison coming home to BBR🦬🦬🦬

We chose to utilize concrete troughs for a couple reasons:

1. Durability - they are concrete and have been sealed/stained
2. Each trough weighs 2800 pounds and can hold 235 gallons of water. Which means that hopefully the bison can’t flip these over 🤷🏽

Bison are the largest mammal in North America. Male bison (called bulls) weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall, while females (called cows) weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet. Bison calves weigh 30-70 pounds at birth.
