“We take action when we have the honesty to admit that things are still broken, despite our best efforts otherwise. We take action when we hold ourselves continually open to new techniques, remaining resolutely receptive to new sources of support and new feeds of information. We take action when we are willing, in each new moment, to try again.” ― Shannon Cutts

➡️Prevention of substance abuse

📎The best way to prevent an addiction to a drug is not to take the drug at all. If your doctor prescribes a drug with the potential for addiction, use care when taking the drug and follow the instructions provided by your doctor.
📎Doctors should prescribe these medications at safe doses and amounts and monitor their use so that you're not given too great a dose or for too long a time. If you feel you need to take more than the prescribed dose of a medication, talk to your doctor.

📎Take these steps to help prevent drug misuse in your children and teenagers:
🗣Communicate: Talk to your children about the risks of drug use and misuse.

👂Listen: Be a good listener when your children talk about peer pressure, and be supportive of their efforts to resist it.

👍Set a good example: Don't misuse alcohol or addictive drugs. Children of parents who misuse drugs are at greater risk of drug addiction.

🤝Strengthen the bond: Work on your relationship with your children. A strong, stable bond between you and your child will reduce your child's risk of using or misusing drugs.

Good morning! Let’s start our day by discussing the treatment for substance abuse disorders.🩺

📎Generally, it is better to treat the substance abuse disorder and the co-occurring mental disorders together rather than separately. Talk to your health care provider to determine what treatment may be best for you and give the treatment time to work.
📎Health care providers may recommend behavioral therapies alone or in combination with medications:

🧪Behavioral Therapies for adults:
☑️Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of talk therapy aimed at helping people learn how to cope with difficult situations by challenging irrational thoughts and changing behaviors.
☑️Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT uses concepts of mindfulness and acceptance or being aware of and attentive to the current situation and emotional state. DBT also teaches skills that can help control intense emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors (e.g., su***de attempts, thoughts, or urges; self-harm; and drug use), and improve relationships.
☑️Assertive Community Treatment (ACT): This is a form of community-based mental health care that emphasizes outreach to the community and an individualized treatment approach.
☑️Therapeutic Communities (TC): TCs are a common form of long-term residential treatment that focuses on helping people develop new and healthier values, attitudes, and behaviors.
☑️Contingency Management (CM): CM principles encourage healthy behaviors by offering vouchers or rewards for desired behaviors.

🧪Behavioral Therapies for Children and Adolescents:
☑️Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT): BSFT therapy targets family interactions thought to maintain or worsen adolescent SUDs and other co-occurring problem behaviors.
☑️Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT): MDFT works with the whole family to simultaneously address multiple and interacting adolescent problem behaviours, such as substance use, mental disorders, school problems, delinquency, and others.
☑️ Multisystemic Therapy (MST): MST targets key factors associated with serious antisocial behavior in children and adolescents with SUDs.

Actions have consequences.🔮
So, what is the consequences of substance abuse disorders?

📎Alcohol and drug misuse can have a wide range of effects; a single instance of alcohol or drug misuse can have profound negative consequences. The specific effects associated with substance misuse depend on the substances used, how much and how often they are used, how they are taken (e.g., orally vs. injected), and other factors. Some of these effects include:

📕Immediate, direct consequences: Substance misuse can have immediate, direct consequences for health ranging from effects on heart rate and regulation of body temperature to psychotic episodes, overdose, and death. Many more people now die from alcohol and drug overdoses each year than are killed in automobile accidents.

📗Indirect consequences related to risky behaviors that often accompany alcohol and drug misuse: Alcohol and drug misuse can impair judgment, leading to risky behaviors including driving under the influence (DUI), unprotected s*x, and needle/syringe sharing. As misuse of some drugs such as prescription opioids progresses, many people seek to intensify the high by injecting them, and sharing of needles among users can result in outbreaks of HIV and hepatitis.

📘Longer-term health effects on a person’s physical and mental health: For example, heavy drinking can lead to hypertension, liver disease, and cancer; regular ma*****na use is associated with chronic bronchitis; and use of stimulants such as co***ne can lead to heart disease. In addition, substance misuse during pregnancy can result in long lasting health effects for the baby including fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

📙Longer-term societal consequences: These can include reduced productivity, higher health care costs, unintended pregnancies, spread of infectious disease, drug-related crime, interpersonal violence, stress within families, and many other direct and indirect effects on communities, the economy, and society as a whole.

Bonus❗️
➡️Recognizing unhealthy drug use in family members

📎Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish normal teenage moodiness or angst from signs of drug use. Possible indications that your teenager or other family member is using drugs include:

🏫Problems at school or work: frequently missing school or work, a sudden disinterest in school activities or work, or a drop in grades or work performance

💪Physical health issues: lack of energy and motivation, weight loss or gain, or red eyes

👔Neglected appearance: lack of interest in clothing, grooming or looks

😵Changes in behavior: exaggerated efforts to bar family members from entering his or her room or being secretive about where he or she goes with friends; or drastic changes in behavior and in relationships with family and friends

💸Money issues: sudden requests for money without a reasonable explanation; or your discovery that money is missing or has been stolen or that items have disappeared from your home, indicating maybe they're being sold to support drug use
