So, what’s the difference between buying and building software?
When we talk about buying, we refer to investing in and configuring existing software solutions to fit your needs. Often this is the cheapest and quickest solution, but it is nearly always the most restrictive.
Additionally, it is rare to own the technology that you buy. For example, if you build a website with a content management system (like Squarespace), you can't take that website with you if you want to move off their platform.
Opposite of buying, building custom solutions allows you to maintain fine-grain control and complete ownership of your technology. However, building a ground-up solution is generally more cumbersome to update and perform upkeep.
