Northern Michigan Heavy Metal

The song In the Valley of Rising Water was inspired by a legend local to the Grand Traverse region of northern MI. Though highly speculated, the legend goes that some divers found an arrangement of stones at the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan) that appeared to have been placed intentionally, with one stone featuring the semblance of a mastodon carved into the rock. Whether it be a true relic of an ancient civilization or just a tall tale, it certainly sparks the imagination and gives a glimpse into the once vast and seemingly limitless wildernesses that lined these sacred boreal shorelines.

April Release Spotlight - Noob Heavy 05/06/2026

“Built on legend and folklore, all is ice and forests and weather and water and crushing, thick bands of deeply soulful work from the guitars. The songs twist and turn, brooding, meditating, screaming forward in manic rushes, pausing for gorgeous reflection. It’s hard to capture in words what Pan has captured in music; just trust me and give it a listen.”

Thank you so much Noob Heavy for the kind words regarding the new album. See link below for the full writeup!

If you want to know what you may have missed out on hearing last month, Andy Synn has a bumper crop of records to recommend from across the sonic spectrum, featuring the likes of:

"This Baltimore-based group – who have earned themselves a new fan in me with this album – deal in a bright, melodic, yet also oddly melancholic, mix of Emo/Indie, Dance Rock, Shoegaze and mathy Post-Hardcore that should (hopefully) appeal to those amongst our readers who are already fans of Astronoid, Good Tiger, and latter-day AFI." - Body Thief

"Proudly wearing their influences on their collective sleeve(s) – think the nihilistic nastiness of Integrity, the ear-bleeding intensity of Earth Crisis and the monstrous impact of Merauder – but cranking up the heaviness to obnoxious, almost Death Metal levels, the group stamp their mark on things hard on 'Exoterror'. - DIVISION OF MIND

"The long-awaited fourth full-length from these Michigan metallers continues to open up multiple new creative avenues which the band - with their inventive brand of “Blackened Progressive Sludge" – are keen to explore." - Pan

"This shift away from the frantic, almost Mathcore-ish approach of their debut towards a much more introspective (albeit, still impressively intense when it needs to be) sound has, in truth, done wonders for the band’s sonic identity, opening them up to new ways of creating and communicating that have allowed them to become their best selves." - The Prestige

"Easily one of the best Doom albums of the year, possessing a scintillating sense of grandeur and a vivid artistic vision thoroughly befitting the similarly epic and evocative artwork that adorns its cover (which is also in the running for one of the best album covers of the year too), 'Anthems…' starts off very strong with the sombre grandeur and soaring gloom of “The Axiom” and only gets stronger as the record goes on." - SolNegre

"Whereas their earlier material leaned heavily on the band’s Immolation influences and Morbid Angel-isms (which is no bad thing) their sound on The Oblation… has expanded in a direction closer to that of Ulcerate (especially during the album’s more oppressive and claustrophobic moments) and Svart Crown (circa Profane) that highlights a newfound focus on space and texture, shape and tension, rather than simple OTT aggression." - Towering

The song “Three Sisters” from our new album “Glacial” was inspired by the many legends that are interwoven in the history of shipping in the Great Lakes region. Tales of towering waves rising without warning from the murk captivate and horrify the imagination.

The outro of the song features the morse code training device pictured here, once belonging to our drummer Ken’s late grandfather who was an operator in WWII. The code used is a translation of the final transmission from the iconic Edmund Fitzgerald “We’re holding our own”. The signal was routed through the legendary HM2 pedal for additional coloring.

WITCHY S**T PLAYLIST -- TRANSFORMING YOUR POWER WITH THE FULL SCORPIO MOON (05/01/2026) - MFKNZINE 05/02/2026

“The mixture of hollowed howls and crashing guitar strings really do remind me of the wild ocean waves that pick up in the dead of night. As soon as you think it’s safe to get near, you get pulled in and under. ‘Glacial’ is a perfect album for anyone losing focus mid-meditation and need to be shaken to their actual core for a second.”

Much appreciation to The Mfknzine for the kind words and for taking “Glacial” for a spin in the latest Witchy S**t Playlist!
