Dexa Scan

DEXA scan may be advised to all those who are at increased risk of osteoporosis, e.g. a fracture following a minor fall or injury; loss of height due to fracture of a vertebra (back bone); use of steroids for more than three months; early menopause (before 45 years); medical conditions associated with osteoporosis such as rheumatoid arthritis or coeliac disease; family history of hip fracture on mother's side of your family; a body mass index of less than 19 (i.e., if you are very underweight); post-menopausal women; personal or family history of osteoporosis, diabetes, liver or renal disease; women with oestrogen deficiency; tall height at age of 25; poor health; inability to rise from a chair without the use of the arms; evidence of vertebral abnormalities; primary hyperparathyroidism; to assess response to approved drug therapies for osteoporosis; history of long-term smoking or alcoholism; poor dietary habits, e.g. low ingestion of calcium and vitamin-D; lack of exercise & physical activity; eating disorder, e.g., anorexia nervosa; irregular periods in premenopausal women; men with low levels testosterone; & history of long-term medicine use that are known to contribute to bone loss (e.g., some sedatives & anticonvulsant drugs).

इन सभी पुरुषों में ऑस्टियोपोरोसिस विकसित होने का खतरा बढ़ जाता है।

DEXA Scans are indicated for all those men:
- who have a body with small thin frame
- with history of fracture of a bone as an adult
- who have any immediate female family member with history of bone fractures as an adult
- who smoke
- who drink alcohol or caffeine regularly
- who have low calcium in their diet
- who exercise less than three times a week
- who have taken long-term steroid therapy for any disease
- with history of hypothyroidism and on treatment
These all men are at an increased risk of developing osteoporosis.

Bone mineral density is widely accepted as a good indicator of the bone strength.

A DEXA SCAN is a special type of X-ray procedure that measures the strength of the bones by measuring the Bone Mineral Density.

DEXA scans are most commonly used to diagnose Osteoporosis (where the bones become weak & fragile and more likely to break).

DEXA scans can also be used to assess the risk of developing osteoporosis, & other bone-related conditions, such as osteopenia (very low bone mineral density).
