From a Vanderbilt infectious disease specialist regarding the possible COVID19 vaccine:

I would like to say something about the CoV vaccines that are in development. I saw a report this morning that ~80% of Americans are "distrustful" of the vaccine and are concerned about political pressures to rush it.

As someone who is currently involved in one of the large COVID vaccine trials and who personally knows many people who were directly involved in the design of the study protocols, power calculations, study timelines, safety assessments, etc., I would like to say 3 things very definitively:

1) There are no "corners being cut" for the safety assessments of these vaccines. Many aspects of the typical timeline were shortened because aspects of trial design and manufacturing occurred in parallel rather than in series as typically happens, but the safety (and efficacy) assessments are every bit as rigorous as any vaccine brought to market to date.

If shown to be safe and effective at the end of the trial, I would absolutely, with confidence and without reservation, receive this vaccine myself and would dearly hope that all my friends and loved ones (and my children once studied in children, which will hopefully start very soon) do the same.

2) The timelines in this trial have ABSOLUTELY NO political influence or bias. An election day was simply not a factor in the study design and timeline. The expedited nature of the study timelines exists because we need a vaccine ASAP to try to get the world back. It turns out that's more than enough motivation.

3) If, rather than waiting for the trial results, which as I mentioned are rigorously and safely designed, a vaccine is "approved" for emergency use by the FDA before the trials are properly analyzed, then items 1 and 2 do not apply.
