I can't tell you how many new clients I had this year that walked in shocked when I asked them about their last years tax returns. They had business's they didn't know existed, they participated in stocks and they did huge donations. One client actually participated in an energy credit for a home they don't own, actually they are renters. I share with them that although the tax liability was reduced and some even received a larger refund, the tax responsibility is theirs and not the preparers, worst if the return shows "Self Prepared" because how will you prove it was them!
