Piano Concerto in A Minor, Mvt 1 Edvard Grieg Sharlene Chiang 23/05/2024

Its the time of the year when I say goodbye to my seniors. This year I have three. It makes me sad as I am not going to be their teacher any longer, and happy because those wonderful young people are turning a page in their life and ready to fly.
Sharlene Chiang senior solo performance with Westfield High School symphonic orchestra led by the music director and conductor Gregory Rupert. She performed first mvt. of Grieg's concerto an a min.
Sharlene truly was the star of the show! Her musicality, technical proficiency, and stage presence were absolutely outstanding. Her harmony with the orchestra seemed flawless.
I am so proud to have such a gifted student.

The Transformative Power of Music: How Piano Lessons Can Shape Young Minds

I have been a music educator for over twenty years. I have the honor to witness a wonderful transformation children go through while growing up. I see little ones coming to my piano studio, often very shy, and a decade later they turn into bright young men and women. I see a promising future ahead of them. After they leave for college, many reach out, sharing their plans and success stories. It gives me joy to know lessons in my studio were part of this transformation.

Music is more than just a beautiful arrangement of sounds; it has the extraordinary power to shape young minds. Research has shown that learning to play an instrument, such as the piano, can significantly enhance cognitive skills in children and ignite creativity.

Children who take piano lessons often develop higher levels of emotional intelligence, as they learn to interpret and express feelings through their playing.

Piano lessons provide an opportunity for young learners to collaborate with their peers, whether through duets, ensembles, or recitals.

As parents and educators, it's our responsibility to provide children with opportunities that enrich their lives and prepare them for a bright future.

Choosing the Perfect Piano:
The piano is not just an instrument; it's a gateway to a world of musical possibilities. It is a very important step and families have to make an educated decision.

The first step in choosing the perfect piano is understanding the key differences between acoustic and digital pianos.
Acoustic pianos have authentic key action and better sound but are heavy and require regular maintenance.
Digital pianos are always in tune, there is no need for a piano tuner. They are easy to transport. In general, they are not as expensive and they have lots of fun features. Electronic pianos often sound artificial and sometimes have light keys, therefore not optimal in developing finger strength.

Each family should find the right balance for budget consideration.

It is very important to spend enough time evaluating piano brands and models
Not all pianos are created equal, and the quality of the instrument can significantly impact your musical journey. There are many reputable places which you can visit to try pianos and get professional guidance. Jordan Kitt's Music Christine's Piano

Yesterday I had a very exiting visit from my former student Adrian Cheung. He is about to start his second year at the Georgia Tech university. He is going to major in CS with a concentration in AI. Being deeply involved with his studies he still finds a lot of joy in playing piano pieces and participating in the orchestra as a violinist. For nine years Adrian was studying piano in my studio. It has been a great pleasure to teach him. He always has been and I am sure still is a very dedicated and enthusiastic scholar. Good luck in your new life adventure!

One of the most popular events my students like to be part of is NVMTA Sonata festival/competition. Roughly 800 students play during one day. Forty get selected as winners and are invited to play at the Honor Recital. Eleven young musicians from my studio participated, five were selected to play on a second round. Maya Ning was announced as a winner. This a recording from Honor Recital! Congratulations Maya!

What does "lifelong learning" mean in the classical music world? 05/04/2023

My musical journey began when I was 8 years old, and it's been an incredible learning experience ever since. From the thrill of uncovering new music for my students to the challenge of learning new piece, every step of the way has been so rewarding. Taking black symbols on a page and transforming them into vibrant, living sound is truly magical!

Few photos from our recent Winter Recital. It was a pleasure to watch my students perform. The first group, composed of my beginner students, was especially impressive as for most of them it was the very first stage performance. The second group, featuring my more experienced students, showcased their growth in skill. It was truly inspiring to observe the development of my students.

What a pleasure for me as a teacher to see a student's comeback to music education. Several years ago Nika put her piano lessons on hold only to return to it with a different twist. Not only she is eager to learn piano, she also plays guitar and deeply involved in her high school band activities.
