Climate Action Network Africa - CAN Africa
The African coalition of civil society organizations, leading the fight against climate change.
Last week, 350 Africa launched their campaign with a vision to revolutionise energy production, expand access to electricity, and redefine Africa’s energy future. The campaign aims to light up 100 villages across the continent, fueling aspirations and paving the way for resilient, sustainable communities to thrive
At CAN Africa, we support their campaign and vision, standing in solidarity as we work towards achieving 100% renewable energy across Africa.

🌍 Yesterday, CAN Africa, represented by Dr. Wafa Misrar participated in a crucial panel discussion on plans for and at the ACN Africa Coal Network meeting in Tanzania.
We reflected on the intense efforts of 2023, which saw significant progress in operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund and advancing the global fight to end fossil fuels. The meeting underscored the urgency of climate justice and systemic change, highlighting the achievements and setting clear objectives for CAN for 2024.
COP29 Goals:
• Secure a fair and equitable NCQG centered on public finance.
• Ensure polluters pay through equitable taxation and redistribution.
Transition Goals:
Advance a fully funded, rapid, feminist, and fair phase-out of fossil fuels.
Promote a just and equitable renewable energy transition.
Just Transition Goals:
• Center the rights and voices of workers and communities.
• Recognize just transition finance as crucial in climate finance.
Today marks the first day of the ACN Africa Coal Network meeting, taking place from July 16-18, 2024, in Tanzania. We are thrilled to share that our Campaign and Policy Officer, Dr. Wafa Misrar is in attendance, representing our commitment to a just transition away from fossil fuels.
The objectives of the ACN meeting are pivotal:
• Reviewing and reflecting on the region's progress over the past two years.
• Consolidating and expanding the ACN roadmap.
• Strengthening and deepening regional collaborations.
In the first panel, Dr. Wafa explored Morocco's Just Transition journey, highlighting the ambitious "100% Renewables for Africa Now" campaign. She emphasized the primary challenges of time and finance, underscoring the critical need for greater engagement in discussions around the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG).
Yesterday, our Campaign and Policy Officer, Dr. WAFA MISRAR, attended a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, the chair of the G77+China at .
During this meeting, His Excellency emphasized that the core of the climate crisis lies in finance. He highlighted that this year’s primary focus is on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), with public finance being central. We are not asking for charity or generosity, but for responsibility.
On the topic of a just transition, the has been advocating for a clear work plan from the outset and now has a structured program outlining what is needed. The unity and solidarity shown by the G77+China is exactly what we need within our African CSOs to advance our work, demonstrate support, and help each other.
Urgent Call to Action for the G7: Prioritize Clean Cooking in Africa
Clean cooking in Africa presents a pressing issue that demands immediate attention from the G7. We appeal to prioritize clean cooking solutions for the continent, where African women and children face significant health risks due to the widespread use of fossil fuels for cooking.
It is imperative that the transition to clean energy sources is accelerated urgently to address these challenges and support Africa’s sustainable energy future.
By investing in clean cooking technologies, the G7 can help reduce health hazards, improve living conditions, and contribute to Africa’s clean energy future.

It's Time to Act NOW! 🌍
Climate Action Network (CAN) Africa urges the G7 to recognize the critical importance of transitioning to renewable energy for the African continent. Despite Africa's vast potential, less than 1% of its renewable energy capacity is currently installed. Millions of Africans still lack access to modern, clean, and affordable energy services.
We call upon the G7 to:
•Increase investment in renewable projects
•Facilitate technology transfer
•Ensure equitable financing
•Promote inclusive policies
Let's power Africa's future sustainably!
The lEA has released a new report tracking countries' ambitions and identifying policies to bridge the renewable capacity gap.
In response, CAN Africa said: "Nearly 200 countries made significant energy pledges at COP28 in Dubai to keep the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C
within reach. As attention shifts to implementation, it is crucial for nations to update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity. According to the report, current ambitions aim for nearly 8,000 GW of renewable power globally by 2030, focusing on solar PV and wind, though hydropower, bioenergy, and other renewables are often overlooked. While announced plans exceed current NDC commitments, they still fall short of the global tripling target. The second chapter, which outlines key policy priorities to bridge the implementation gap, was particularly insightful." - Wafa Misrar, Policy & Campaigns Coordinator

Sharing insights from a new policy paper by Christian Aid published during the AfDB Annual Meeting in Nairobi. The research underscores how the African Development Bank (AfDB) could do more to enhance sustainable renewable energy access for the 600 million Africans currently lacking it.
Key findings from the analysis of AfDB investments (2015-2023) include:
-77.37% of AfDB’s power generation projects were in renewables, such as grid enhancement, solar PV, solar mini grids, geothermal, hydroelectricity, and clean cooking.
-15.13% of projects focused on incentives and technical assistance for renewable energy.
-Despite substantial investment in renewables, 7.5% of total investments went to non-renewables, including five gas projects and one coal project, due to their economic and community impacts.

The Clean Cooking in Africa declaration shared yesterday in Paris appears to be influenced by affluent individuals, predominantly from the Global North, as it overlooks the severe poverty and disempowerment faced by women who rely on dirty fuels for cooking.
It does not take into account the development of a sustainable local economy in clean cooking technologies and instead suggests short-term subsidies to the private sector to establish a gas-powered market. Often, the emphasis on clean cooking alternatives by African politicians serves as a justification for expanding gas infrastructure, which mainly benefits gas exports rather than providing gas to those using dirty fuels.
To effectively tackle this issue, it is crucial to focus on the needs of African women, prioritizing their well-being over the profit-driven motives of the private sector.

Fossil fuels are driving the climate crisis. We must transition from coal, oil, and gas to save lives today and in the future. We must do this in a way that protects the most vulnerable in our society. And, if we’re smart, we’ll create a better, more equal world in the process.
We need to end the fossil fuel era to secure a liveable future – before it's too late The Fossil Fuel Treaty is a proposal for a global exit plan from fossil fuels that’s gaining ground around the world.
