What motivates you? Winning or growth? Running the balls out, when you’re supposed to, or firing at the money ball? If you’re not first, you’re last? All or nothing?

As I sit on a plane, flying back from a tournament in Las Vegas I had high hopes of winning… I think about the 9th place money in my pocket vs the 1st place money in someone else’s pocket. Did I fail? Did I grow? Did I learn? Does it matter?

I guess the answer depends on the person. For the longest time, I was a results driven person. It was first or last. Winning was everything. Probably stems from my younger days of playing team sports where I had more natural abilities and success sort of came easy. So when I began playing pool, I expected the same. It wasn’t lol. Unfortunately winning was few and far between. High finishes but that wasn’t the same. Or the goal.

So when the results and expectations weren’t met, I realized there are two roads I can take from here. I can continue on course and accept that I won’t grow much, if at all. Or I can change my mindset and focus on growth. Around the middle of the pandemic, I chose to make a change.

I started over. I reevaluated everything. My stance, my grip, my stroke, my eye patterns… my everything. If I’m going to grow, I want to give myself the best chance. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge over the years from top players and watching a ton of matches but knowledge only goes so far in a game that requires physical ability.

Real growth takes time and nourishment. A lot of both. And trust in the process. As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Too often, we get impatient and check our progress by short term results which leads to frustration and possibly giving up on the process. If you planted a tree from a seed, you wouldn’t dig it up each day to make sure it’s growing… that would almost certainly guarantee that tree never grows.

So as I sit on this flight, I remind myself that a year ago, I wouldn’t have cashed in this tournament. Two years ago, I would have been been straight up drawing dead against anyone in the field. Where will I be next year? Who knows…

At the end of the road, results without process equals luck. Process without results equals failure to grow. The frustrating yet beautiful thing is, the process never ends unless you allow it. Some of the best in the world still push to become better while other top level players are content with the player they’ve become.
