My Trinidad - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

My Trinidad - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

We are not into politics.

A monthly, online magazine about our homeland and birthplace, Trinidad, what it was or where we came from, what it is and where it is heading or what it will be, especially if we don't help to influence the future of our country.

Folks. Friends of Mr. Biswas has an important event giving us a sense of one of the greats, Seepersad Naipaul on May 4, 2024 at the Couva Public Library at 2.30 pm to 5 pm.

Seepersad Naipaul (1906–1953) was a Trinidadian writer and the father of V. S. Naipaul and Shiva Naipaul. He married into the influential Indo-Trinidadian Capildeo family. Seepersad Naipaul worked as the first Indo-Trinidadian journalist for the Trinidad Guardian. His only book, The Adventures of Gurudeva, is a collection of linked comic short stories that was first published in Trinidad and Tobago in 1943 (under the title Gurudeva and Other Indian Tales). Interestingly, the elder Naipaul wanted his son "Vido" (as he called him) to try to get his story collection published in London, with the hope that any earnings would help the family escape poverty in Trinidad and Tobago. However, the book was not published in London until after Seepersad's death5.

Additionally, there is a fascinating collection of family letters titled Between Father and Son, which features correspondence between Seepersad Naipaul and V. S. Naipaul, along with other family members. These letters span from around the time Vido won a scholarship to Oxford University until the older Naipaul's passing. The collection was published in 1999 and was also excerpted in The New Yorker

Fellow members of MY TRINIDAD: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. We have just completed our 26th Issue thanks to the combined management, leadership and talent of Johnny Coomansingh and Raynier Maharaj as well as the work of our writers and the support of our members. We have come a long way in our 2 years and 2 months, producing 26 issues without any money and proving that Sparrow, great as he is, was wrong when he sang and insisted, "No money, no love." We must have love in abundance to establish and keep growing the only online literary magazine in the Caribbean without a single cent. We might be short of cash but not of enthusiasm, concern for our country and talent.
On Monday we enter and are part of a new chapter in our nation's history. Our core member and one of the people who helped me to make this magazine happen, Ken Ramchand, as President of The Friends of Mr. Biswas, with support from his team, UWI, NALIS, the Ministry of Education and our National Archives are holding LITTCON 2020, a historic literary event which aims to highlight the literature of Trinidad and Tobago since 1980 and demonstrate the urgent need to expose the nation and the nation’s children to the valuable store available to them. It starts on Monday, September 21st and ends on the 24th.
The schedule, registration information and some background about the participants can be found at:
http://conferences.sta.uwi.edu/littcon/
You will note that in addition to Ken, there are several other members of My Trinidad who join me among the participants - Motilal Boodoosingh, Johnny Coomansingh, Yvonne Bobb-Smith, Kin Man Young Tai and Dawad Philip.
I hope all our members will tune into the event when possible since it is, in a true sense, a coming to age of My Trinidad. We are part of this conference and while our existence and progress have been largely ignored by the mainstream media and the literary "hoi-polloi" of the country, we have not just arrived but reached without over-reaching. We have found a rightful place in the country we consider our home and muse.
For those who want to follow the event this is your ticket:

Passcode: 253982
I would appreciate your sharing this with your friends.
All the best to My Trinidad: Yesterday, Today and especially Tomorrow.
Tony.
