Expiration dates can be a nightmare for people who have invested thousands and thousands on a bottle of their favourite perfume. Many of us have a common belief that Perfume and Coffee never expire. However, the fact is that Perfumes do get expired but it depends on how you are preserving them and also the chemical composition of that specific perfume.

Most perfume bottles do not feature an expiry date because it is very complicated to state exactly when the perfume might go bad. As mentioned before, the chemical composition of the perfume plays a big role in its expiry. It is said generally that an open perfume bottle can last anywhere between 1-10 years. However, you can make it last a few more years if you are able to store the bottle perfectly.

The primary way to identify if your Perfume has gone bad is to detect a change in its smell. The smell might turn sour and metallic upon expiration. Also, if the juice is dark colored it might fade. But why does this happen? It is because of oxidisation. The oxygen present in air alters the chemical composition of fragrances which makes the notes disappear quickly. Perfumes with higher concentrations of alcohol and water evaporates quickly while perfumes with heavier base notes age like fine wine. On the other hand, unopened bottles hardly expire when stored in favourable conditions. It is not adviced to use perfumes that show the above mentioned signs as it may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

So, to be safe and make sure your perfume lasts way past the expiration dates, you must keep a few things in mind while using and storing it. Firstly, a temperature controlled environment is very important. That doesn't mean you have to store it in extremely cold places like the fridge. It means there should be a balance of temperature between cool and room temperature wherever you are storing your bottle. Keep your perfume as far as possible from heat sources like the sun. Always remember that frequent change in humidity and moisture makes your perfume expire faster. Therefore, to preserve the beautiful fragrance you must keep it at a place where the temperature and moisture is well balanced and constant.
Secondly, any tampering with the bottle must be avoided. This means no unnecessary shaking the bottle or changing the container frequently. It's better not to bring out the juice from the original bottle and refill in another bottle. Also, never ever keep the bottle open for too long as it may oxidize due to contact with air.

Finally, here's a small tip if you want to store the last few drops of your favourite perfume for a special occasion in the near future. You can mix the perfume juice with a fragrance free lotion. This might make the smell a bit weaker but it creates a new medium for the fragrance to last a few more years.

So, hopefully you now know how to tackle the terrible issue of perfume expiration dates! Keep in mind that proper storage goes a long long way to keep your perfume from going bad and that's a fact!

"Yves Saint Laurent" or simply known as "YSL" the famous French fashion house by Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent AKA the God of Fashion.

Let me give you a brief on the inception of YSL. Laurent's career in fashion began at the tender age of 17, when he served as assistant to Christian Dior. Being outstanding in whatever he did at that time, Laurent was named head of the house of Dior at just 21 years of age. Still a young man when the Algerian War of Independence broke out, Laurent was drafted into the army in 1960. Military service and despair over the loss of his design position resulted in a hospital stay. After a brief period of recuperation, Laurent started his own fashion company and went on to become one of the most influential fashion designers of the 1960s and 1970s.

Yves Saint Laurent remained active as the collection's main designer through the late 1980s. After his retirement, a series of designers including Alber Elbaz, Tom Ford and Stefano Pilati have produced collections for the brand.
