In many ways, it’s business as usual in Washington when it comes to Beijing. The two capitals have recently squabbled over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But longer-running disputes are also still rumbling, possibly reigniting a trade war or screening U.S. investments in the People’s Republic. Whatever happens in Ukraine, economic relations look set to get worse.

European brewers Heineken and Carlsberg said Monday they will exit the Russian market following reviews of their operations triggered by the invasion of Ukraine.

Denmark's Carlsberg, which has 8,400 employees in Russia, said it was seeking a "full disposal" of its business but would maintain operations at a reduced level "to sustain the livelihoods of these employees and their families" until the sale was complete.

"The war in Ukraine, and the escalating humanitarian and refugee crisis, shocks us all. We continue to strongly condemn the Russian invasion, which has led to so much loss of life, devastation and human tragedy," Carlsberg CEO Cees 't Hart said in a statement.

Carlsberg's Russia business reported revenue and operating profit of 6.5 billion Danish krone ($958 million) and 682 million krone ($100 million) respectively in 2021. The group said Monday that the disposal would result in a "substantial" impairment charge.

Heineken (HEINY) had already halted new investments and exports to Russia and had stopped the sale, production and advertising of its Heineken brand beer in the country.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened to watch the war in Ukraine continue to unfold and intensify," the Dutch brewer said in a statement.

The brewer of Moretti and Amstel said it was aiming to transfer the business to a new owner, while complying with Russian and international laws.

"To ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of our employees and to minimize the risk of nationalization, we concluded that it is essential that we continue with the recently reduced operations during this transition period," it added.

The brewer said it will pay salaries to its 1,800 employees in Russia until the end of 2022 and "will do our utmost to safeguard their future employment."

Heineken expects to take a €400 million ($439 million) hit from the move.

"Upon completion of the transfer Heineken will no longer have a presence in Russia," the company said.

Heineken reported in February that its Russian beer volumes had grown by a few percentage points in 2021, driven by stronger demand for Heineken, Miller and Dr Diesel premium brands. It also reported growth for its market leading cider business in Russia.

Dozens of companies across all sectors of the economy have abandoned Russia or frozen their operations there since the invasion on Feb. 24.

Rival brewer AB InBev (BUD), the maker of Budweiser and other brands, has said it "requested the controlling shareholder" of its Russia operations to suspend the license for the production and sale of Bud in the country. The company is also "forfeiting all financial benefit" from its joint venture operations. Employees will still be paid.

I am truly saddened to learn of the passing of Madeleine Albright, an American giant whose life and legacy will be remembered for generations to come. She was the last secretary of state for the 20th century and the first of the 21st century. She was not only a trailblazer for women worldwide, but a fearless fighter for freedom on behalf of all humanity. For me personally, I have lost an invaluable colleague and a very dear friend whom I will miss tremendously.

When I was studying music at the University of Denver, I took a class on international politics from a professor who changed the course of my life. That professor was Madeleine’s father, Josef Korbel. How extraordinary that two female secretaries of state, from opposites sides of the political spectrum, would be influenced by the same man. While we had our differences on policy, we shared a deep appreciation for this country and for freedom around the world.

Hers really was a great American story: that one can come from humble beginnings and go on to change the world in remarkable ways. Madeleine Albright left her mark. She made a difference. May she rest in peace.

The war in Ukraine and Russia's effective exclusion from the global currency system could be an opportunity for China to raise the profile of its currency in a challenge to the U.S. dollar, a senior Taiwanese security official said on Monday.

Russia has said it is counting on China to help it withstand the blow to its economy from Western sanctions, and will use Chinese yuan from its foreign exchange reserves after the sanctions blocked its access to its U.S. dollars and euros reserves.

Taking questions in parliament, National Security Bureau Director-General Chen Ming-tong said China had always wanted a way to throw off the domination of the U.S. dollar, and the war could boost the use of the yuan.

"Whether in renminbi trade or currency issuance system, this is an opportunity that must be taken" by China, Chen said, using the yuan's formal name.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has raised its security alert level since the war, wary of Beijing making a similar move against it, and Taiwanese officials have been studying the lessons both they and China could learn from the conflict.

Chen said the war could actually improve China-U.S. relations if China chose to stand with the United States in the same way it did after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks which earned U.S. goodwill.

"The Ukraine-Russia war is maybe another 911-style opportunity," he said.

Beijing has repeatedly voiced opposition to the sanctions on russia and has insisted it will maintain normal economic and trade exchanges. It has declined to condemn Moscow's action in Ukraine or call it an invasion.

But behind the scenes, China is wary of its companies running afoul of sanctions and is pressing companies to tread carefully with investment in Russia, its second-largest oil supplier and third-largest gas provider.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for restraint in both words and actions in dealing with the Ukraine conflict, after U.S. President Joe Biden described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "butcher" and said he should not remain in power.

U.S. President Joe Biden said that Russia's leader Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power" in Poland Saturday, remarks a White House official said later were meant to prepare the world's democracies for extended conflict over Ukraine, not back regime change in Russia.

Biden's comments on Saturday, including a statement earlier in the day calling Putin a "butcher," were a sharp escalation of the U.S. approach to Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

In a major address delivered at Warsaw's Royal Castle, Biden evoked Poland's four decades behind the Iron Curtain in an effort to build a case that the world's democracies must urgently confront an autocratic Russia as a threat to global security and freedom.

But a remark at the end of the speech raised the spectre of an escalation by Washington, which has avoided direct military involvement in Ukraine, and has specifically said it does not back regime change.

"For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power," Biden told a crowd in Warsaw after condemning Putin's month-long war in Ukraine.

A White House official said Biden's remarks did not represent a shift in Washington's policy.

"The President's point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbours or the region," the official said. "He was not discussing Putin's power in Russia, or regime change."

Asked about Biden's comment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters: "That's not for Biden to decide. The president of Russia is elected by Russians."

Calling the fight against Putin a "new battle for freedom," Biden said Putin's desire for "absolute power" was a strategic failure for Russia and a direct challenge to a European peace that has largely prevailed since World War Two.

"The West is now stronger, more united than it has ever been," Biden said. "This battle will not be won in days or months, either. We need to steel ourselves for the long fight ahead."

The speech came after three days of meetings in Europe with the G7, European Council and NATO allies, and took place roughly at the same time as rockets rained down on the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, just 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the Polish border.
