Your eyes are as dependent on good nutrition as any other part of your body.
And the good news for us in the Caribbean? Many of the foods that protect your eyes are already part of our traditional diet.
Hereβs what the research shows:
π₯¬ Lutein & Zeaxanthin β callaloo, spinach, kale
Concentrated in the macula. Protective against macular degeneration.
π Vitamin C β guava, citrus fruits, sweet peppers
Antioxidant. May reduce cataract risk.
π° Vitamin E β nuts, seeds, vegetable oils
Protective for the lens and retina.
π Omega-3 Fatty Acids β local fish, flaxseed
Important for tear film quality and retinal health.
π₯© Zinc β meat, shellfish, legumes
Essential for transporting Vitamin A to the retina.
Eating local isnβt just good for the economy. Itβs good for your eyes.

Leo was seven years old when his parents brought him to see Dr. Onu.
He had been struggling at school β difficulty concentrating, losing his place when reading, occasional headaches. His teacher had suggested he might have attention difficulties.
When Dr. Onu examined him, the explanation was straightforward and entirely fixable: Leo had a significant uncorrected refractive error. He was working so hard to force his eyes to focus that by mid-morning, he was exhausted.
What looked like inattention was actually visual fatigue.
Leo was fitted with glasses. Within weeks, his teacher was reporting a completely different child in the classroom.
This is not unusual. Undetected vision problems are one of the most common β and most preventable β causes of learning difficulties in children.
For parents: every child should have their eyes examined before starting school, and every one to two years thereafter.
And here's something worth knowing: research shows that children who spend more time outdoors in natural daylight are less likely to develop short-sightedness. Aim for 90 minutes daily.
Share this with a parent who might need to hear it. π

MYTH: βMy glasses are making my eyes worse.β
This is one of the most common misconceptions in eye care.
Your prescription changes because your eyes change β with age, with genetics. The glasses simply reveal and correct the current state of your vision. They do not accelerate or cause that change.
What NOT wearing your prescribed glasses does cause: eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue.
If youβve been avoiding your glasses for this reason β please donβt. They are helping you, not hurting you.

Ms. L. had been suffering from recurring styes and persistent eye irritation for over a year.
She had been to several clinics. She had been given various eye drops and antibiotics. Nothing lasted.
When Dr. Onu examined her eyelids carefully, the diagnosis was clear: blepharitis β chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins affecting the oil glands.
The treatment was not a prescription. It was a routine.
Twice-daily warm compresses, followed by gentle lid cleaning. Within six weeks, her symptoms had reduced dramatically.
Symptoms of blepharitis:
ποΈ Burning or stinging eyes
ποΈ Morning crusting of the eyelashes
ποΈ Red, inflamed eyelid margins
ποΈ A gritty feeling in the eye
ποΈ Intermittent blurred vision that clears with blinking
If this sounds familiar, come in. The right diagnosis changes everything.
