Airakty Valley of Castles, Mangystau (Kazakhstan)

The Airakty stand as a group of stunning mountains with sharp cliffs and unusual crevices. Each mountain appears as a formidable fortress, their edges resembling towers, earning them the moniker “Valley of Castles.” This evocative name was coined by Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian writer and poet, who found himself exiled in Mangystau during the mid-19th century and also created the first drawings of these mountains.

Formed from limestone, the Airakty Mountains were part of the ancient Tethys Ocean seabed around 40 million years ago. Although they are already millions of years old, the erosion continues; in a thousand years, their shapes will have changed, and in a million years, they might be gone altogether.

There’s a prevailing theory that merchant caravans traveling the Great Silk Road once passed through Ayrakty, with legends even suggesting buried treasures in the area. Today, amateur archaeologists and treasure hunters, armed with metal detectors, sometimes visit, hoping for a lucky find. Some have even unearthed ancient coins.

However, the true allure of the Airakty tract lies in its natural beauty, the main treasure of this extraordinary place. Springtime is particularly breathtaking when the valley blooms in lush greenery and flowers, including the Sogdian tulips. Wild horses and mouflons are known to graze in the valley, while turtles and various small steppe creatures can be found at the foot of the mountains.

The Abul Kasym Madrasah, Tashkent

The building itself is a historical monument built in the middle of the 19th century, on the money of the well-known and respected representative of the Tashkent elite Abulkasym eshon.

The place to build a madrasah was not chosen by chance. Here was located the sanctuary, where according to legend, were stored few hairs from the beard of the Prophet. Madrasah was built near the sanctuary. Over time, the sanctuary became Muyi Mubarak Hanaka mosque at madrasah. According to the layout, madrasah is a typical medieval building with a rectangular courtyard. The building is two-storey with hujras (student rooms) along the perimeter and learning rooms (darskhona). As in most medieval madrasahs, patterned wooden lattice – pandjars, art works in themselves, are imbedded in most hudjras.

To date, the building houses the National Centre of Applied Arts. Every connoisseur of oriental culture can visit the madrasah and watch how famous Uzbek craftswomen work. Here one can find the works of skilled embroiderers: carpets, shawls, scarves, bags embroidered in traditional style. Connoisseurs of metal products can purchase various items of metal, with sophisticate carvings and engravings. Here one can observe with one’s own eyes how oriental miniatures are created by talented artists, how a piece of wood turns into a magnificent carved jewelry box, etc.

The Guardian mentioned Advantour in one of its articles

‘A sense of wonder enveloped my mother and me’: Mishal Husain visited Uzbekistan and penned her reflections.

In 1992, she first explored Uzbekistan, driven by the knowledge of her maternal ancestors residing in the region during the 14th century.

Returning in 2024, Mishal Husain sought to juxtapose her present impressions with those of three decades past, introducing her mother to the country and possibly tracing her forefather's grave.

"There are a few direct flights a week between the UK and Uzbekistan, but we wanted to fly into Urgench, in the west, and then travel between the key cities of Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent by train. That meant changing planes in Istanbul on our way in and out of the country, and friends recommended a Tashkent-based travel company, Advantour, to make the train and hotel bookings and help us with a detailed itinerary. They included a guide in each of our four destinations", wrote Mishal Husain.

The duo explored several historical cities of Uzbekistan, with the author observing, “Uzbekistan is as yet unspoiled by mass tourism and much less discovered by visitors from the UK than by those from other European countries: we saw French and Italian groups, but no British ones".

Best Time to Visit Kyrgyzstan

The best time to visit Kyrgyzstan is in summer. The country is one of the highest countries in the world and because it is mostly mountains, the temperatures may be hot in Bishkek but are almost always refreshing and comfortable the higher up you go.

Summer in Kyrgyzstan is long and hot, with temperatures occasionally soaring up to 45°C in the lower-lying areas, but usually fluctuating between +25 and 35°C. Despite the persistent warmth, summers tend to be a little wetter with storms rolling through the country and this contrast makes summer the best time to visit Kyrgyzstan. If you head up into the mountains, you will find that the temperatures are far cooler but the winds are significantly more noticeable.

Autumn in Kyrgyzstan is outstandingly beautiful and one of the best times to visit Kyrgyzstan. As the summer starts to cool off, the trees start to change and the natural world starts to fade from green to a beautiful, reddish-brown. Unlike many other places in the world, the first part of autumn in Kyrgyzstan tends to be dry and relatively sunny.

Winter in Kyrgyzstan. From November onwards, the Kyrgyzstan winter sets in and temperatures can plummet lower than -30°C in Narin, in Bishkek it varies from +5 to -15°C. Despite these frigid temperatures, the air remains relatively dry and is only punctuated with occasional snow flurries that top up the white blanket that covers the country.

Spring in Kyrgyzstan is probably the shortest season. During this time temperatures start to wildly fluctuate and days of warm sunshine can be interrupted with sudden snowfall. As spring goes on, the snow starts to melt and meltwater fills up the Kyrgyz alpine lakes.

Anyone familiar with Uzbek cuisine knows that a list of must Things to Do in Tashkent must include plov! Head to the Central Asian Plov Center, where a huge portion of this mouthwatering dish will be served to you on a traditional plate. To enjoy your plov like a local, be sure to eat it with fresh flatbread, pickles, tomato and onion salad (achik chuchuk) and some “Tashkent tea”, a sweetened black tea flavored with lemon. This classic and filling meal is a hit not only for its amazing taste but also its ridiculously low price, equivalent to about 7.5 USD for two portions. Although pilaf can be found at cafes all across Tashkent, nowhere are the queues longer than at Plov Center, where customers even buy the irresistible dish by the bucketful!

We recommend you try the traditional wedding pilaf.

If you have not been to Uzbekistan and want to taste delicious dishes of national Uzbek cuisine, we will be happy to see you on our tours https://www.advantour.com/uzbekistan/tours.htm

Falconry in Kyrgyzstan

This remarkable type of hunting, in which a bird assists a person in capturing prey, has been a part of Kyrgyzstan's culture for centuries. Researchers have discovered evidence within modern-day Kyrgyzstan that confirms the existence of falconry dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C.

The Kyrgyz still value hunting birds, because once, one bird alone could feed the whole village. However, nowadays hunting has developed into an entertainment and modern falconers take falconry more for their own pleasure and for tourists.

In Kyrgyzstan you can see a variety of hunting birds - from eagles and erne to vultures and falcons.

Each hunter raises a chick for 3-4 years: feeds it, cares for it and talks so that the bird gets used to the owner's voice. Then the owner shows the bird the fur and skin of the animals it is supposed to hunt. Keep in mind that falconry is a spectacle for people with a strong spirit. You will see how a bird of prey attacks its prey and kills it.

Exploring Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, is a key feature of many of our tours in the country. While touring the city, you can expect to witness a guard of honor at the Ala-Too Square.

On August 16, 1998, the honor guard company of the National Guard of the Kyrgyz Republic made history as they assumed their position at the flagpole with the State Flag on Ala-Too Square.
Every day, in any weather, the guard is carried by two employees of the National Guard. The changing of the guard of honor takes place several times a day and attracts the attention of not only foreign guests, but also residents of the capital.

✅The Kyrgyz honor guard is notable for its unique marching style, characterized by a precise angle of 90 degrees in their steps.

The honor guard has been relieved from its position at the post only three times. Firstly, in 2009, amidst the replacement of the 18-meter flagpole with a taller 45-meter one. Then, in 2016, the guard of honor was absent for two yeats due to repair works during the initial phase of the reconstruction of the State Historical Museum of the Kyrgyz Republic. Finally, in late 2023, the guard of honor was temporarily excused from its duties for four days to facilitate the reconstruction of the honor guard cabin.

A trip to the Aral Sea is a unique and unusual destination

Even just fifty years ago, the Aral Sea was such a big saltwater lake straddling the border between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, that it had to be called a sea. As the sea began to recede, it left fishing villages far from the water and revealed the strange contours of the Aral Desert and the Ustyurt Plateau. Ships were left stranded, gathered into graveyards, and left to rust; communities that remembered the rich marshland ecosystems were suddenly surrounded by desert.

A trip to the Aral Sea can be saddening, since it shows how much damage humans can create, yet the landscapes have an eerie and haunting beauty. Head to the Aral Sea for a unique opportunity for adventure seekers, photographers, and ecologists.

Our Aral Sea tours take you from the broad desert and last waters of the Aral Sea to the Mizdakhan Necropolis and the Gyaur-Kala Fortress, telling the modern history of this region of Uzbekistan.

Nomadic life laid the foundation for Kazakh national cuisine many centuries ago. Much energy was required for the people’s rugged lifestyle lived out under harsh climactic conditions, and as a result the local diet has long featured hearty dishes made from filling and readily available ingredients, namely meat and milk products.

Traditional Kazakhstan food

🍜Beshparmak – National dish of meat and thinly-rolled noodles, flavored with broth and eaten by hand

🍜Shashlyk – Melt-in-your-mouth kebabs of beef chunks, ground beef, lamb, chicken and even liver

🍜Laghman – Fresh noodles, meat and vegetables are fried, boiled or served in a soup in this Uyghur classic

🍜Baursak – Homemade balls of dough, fried and often paired with jam, are a true treat

🍜Shelpek – Delicious tortilla-like fried patties, they may be eaten as is or stuffed with meat and onions

🍜Kazi – Slices of horsemeat sausage are a true taste of Kazakhstan

🍜Koje – Special dish for the Navruz holiday, it consists of seven ingredients including sour milk, cereals, horsemeat and salt

🍜Kumys – A cold bowl of fermented mare’s milk in summer is just the way to cool off Kazakh-style

🍜Shek-Shek (Chak-Chak) – Sweet and sticky Tatar dessert of fried dough balls flavored with honey, raisins or nuts

Traditional Kazakhstan food today is a symbiosis of traditions old and new. For example, previously there were no side dishes in Kazakh cuisine and meat alone might constitute an entire meal. It was only after the Kazakhs became sedentary and began to be influenced by surrounding nations that legumes, fruits, vegetables, fish, flour products and sweets appeared in their diet.
