Did you know that trees provide a $73 BILLION benefit to society from environmental benefits like carbon sequestration, reduced air pollution, and reduced storm water runoff? Urban forestry has a huge impact on quality life and our economy.

The Arbor Day Foundation, along with the U.S. Forest Service is honored to have sponsored a new study conducted by the Nebraska Bureau of Business Research aimed to determine the quality-of-life contributions and economic footprint of the urban forestry sector in the US. We are honored to be a part of this restoration project!

At long last! The next phase of the restoration of the Hilton Ravine will begin next week. Crews with Commonwealth Landworks will begin the restoration of the pathway starting Monday. Once started (and if weather cooperates) the project should last about one week. The Ravine will remain open but we ask visitors to keep a wide berth from the project.

Restoration of the Hilton Ravine is as a project of the Newport News Green Foundation, in partnership with the Friends of the James River at Hilton Beach, the Historical Hilton Village, Inc., and the City of Newport News. Since 2017, this partnership has stewarded the Ravine by controlling invasive species, returning it to a useable space, and planting over 75 native trees and shrubs. To learn more or to give to the restoration, please visit: https://nngreen.com/hilton-ravine-restoration.

Today is the first day of Hurricane Season. We have certified arborists to help prepare your trees ahead of any storm! CALL US TO SCHEDULE AN ESTIMATE.

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) suggests the following practical steps.

• Survey property for trees showing signs of instability such as cracks in trunks of major limbs, dead branches, aged or decaying trees.
• Look for potential hazards by checking for branches that hang over the roof or those close to power lines.
• Have a professional remove damaged or decaying trees. Leaning trees may have root issues so have them inspected by one of our Certified Arborist.
• Document tree value - Properly maintained trees may increase property value by up to 20%. One of our ISA Certified Arborists can provide an estimated value by inspecting your trees.

Fall Pruning Schedule! 757-873-8525

❓WHY IS LATE FALL THROUGH EARLY SPRING BEST FOR TREE PRUNING?

✔️ In fall and winter, trees enter a dormant stage, halting their growth. This inactivity along with dropping temperatures creates an ideal setting for pruning. If you prune after new growth has started, you can limit the plant’s bloom potential for the year.

Helpful tips. 🌳 Call us soon for a free consultation by one of our certified arborists!

Breakdown: Why soggy ground can bring trees down According to experts, when trees are uprooted, the roots are to blame. A tree’s root system serves several purposes. The two main important jobs are to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, and to anchor the tree, which will keep the tree straight and stable.

Yep.. it's almost Hurricane Season folks. We are here to help you prepare ahead! All of these things should be done over the lifetime of the tree, not just before a hurricane.

~ The most important factor is good tree vigor. Keep your trees happy and healthy with proper mulching, fertilization (as per soil test results) and watering in times of drought. A vigorous tree is less likely to receive damage and better able to overcome any damage that does occur.

~ Proper pruning is also important to help avoid or reduce major damage to your tree. Have your tree's branch structure evaluated and pruned by a certified arborist before the hurricane season. Proper pruning today can help to avoid broken limbs tomorrow and may help to prevent total loss when a hurricane comes.

~ Cabling and bracing may also be appropriate in trees with multiple trunks, large limbs or co-dominant stems. These are structural features of a tree that are particularly likely to fail in high-wind events.
