First the ax, then the fungus: Family-run tree company saves live oaks in Newport News A Yorktown-based tree care company is donating about $30,000 of work to preserve 15 live oak trees along Warwick Boulevard.

🌳Hubbard Tree Care is continuing the legacy of John Hubbard in the Live Oak Preservation Project at The Mariners' Museum and Park along Warwick Boulevard.

At long last! The next phase of the restoration of the Hilton Ravine will begin next week. Crews with Commonwealth Landworks will begin the restoration of the pathway starting Monday. Once started (and if weather cooperates) the project should last about one week. The Ravine will remain open but we ask visitors to keep a wide berth from the project.

Restoration of the Hilton Ravine is as a project of the Newport News Green Foundation, in partnership with the Friends of the James River at Hilton Beach, the Historical Hilton Village, Inc., and the City of Newport News. Since 2017, this partnership has stewarded the Ravine by controlling invasive species, returning it to a useable space, and planting over 75 native trees and shrubs. Breakdown: Why soggy ground can bring trees down According to experts, when trees are uprooted, the roots are to blame. A tree’s root system serves several purposes. The two main important jobs are to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, and to anchor the tree, which will keep the tree straight and stable.

Yep.. it's almost Hurricane Season folks. We are here to help you prepare ahead! All of these things should be done over the lifetime of the tree, not just before a hurricane.

~ The most important factor is good tree vigor. Keep your trees happy and healthy with proper mulching, fertilization (as per soil test results) and watering in times of drought. A vigorous tree is less likely to receive damage and better able to overcome any damage that does occur.

~ Proper pruning is also important to help avoid or reduce major damage to your tree. Have your tree's branch structure evaluated and pruned by a certified arborist before the hurricane season. Proper pruning today can help to avoid broken limbs tomorrow and may help to prevent total loss when a hurricane comes.

~ Cabling and bracing may also be appropriate in trees with multiple trunks, large limbs or co-dominant stems. These are structural features of a tree that are particularly likely to fail in high-wind events.

Hubbard Brothers Tree Consultants Saves a Bird

A bird was sited caught on a street light by some neighborhood children and parents at Hidenwood Elementary School parking lot on May 21, 2013. It was told that the bird was caught there since it was a baby. Apparently the bird had a fishing line wrapped around it's leg. Joel Hubbard, a Certified Arboirst / Manager of Hubbard Brothers Tree Consultants arranged a plan and provided the needed equipment to rescue the bird. Dave Douglas, a Certified Arboirst who also works for Hubbard Brothers Tree Consultants took action in releasing and saving the captive bird. With the help of the Hubbard Brothers bucket truck , David Douglas was finally able to save the little creature. Thanks to Joel's and David's heroic actions, the bird is now safe at Virginia Wildlife Center in Newport News, VA.
