Together, we will keep pushing for the justice and accountability our community deserves.

Today we're shining a spotlight on the Coalition’s community organizing work in Brockton with our community partners at the Brockton Coalition For Education Justice - Brockton Interfaith Community, RCAM Brockton, DARRC Coalition, Youth SOL Brockton, Resilient Roses Respite, and CoopMatters Collaborative Business Development.

At MACOPGV, our mission is to create a world where all of us can live free from the threat of gun violence. That’s why we approach gun violence prevention through a public health lens and focus on addressing its root causes. One of those root causes is chronic disinvestment in our youth and educational institutions.

When our educational institutions lack the necessary resources, students often face a multitude of challenges - including overcrowded classrooms, outdated materials, limited extracurricular activities, and inadequate counseling and mental health services. This neglect of mental health can lead to untreated trauma and emotional distress, which are well-documented risk factors for future involvement in violent behaviors, including gun violence.

By addressing the root causes of gun violence through increased funding for schools, we can provide students with better opportunities and support systems, and create safer, more resilient communities.

By supporting the Brockton Coalition For Education Justice, we are one step closer to ensuring that it becomes a reality.

We, DARRC Coalition, are in solidarity with the movement seeking to hold Public Officials, The Brockton Police Department, our State and our Nation accountable. We are committed to identifying and taking concrete actions to dismantle inequality.

On Monday, July, 18, 2022, a probable cause hearing was held for criminal complaint against ex-Police Chief Gomes for the three-vehicle crash he caused on May 15, 2021. The criminal complaint was lead by a civilian we are supporting in this process that should have been carried out by state police.

Ex-Police Chief Emanuel Gomes will face charges brought by a civilian complaint for negligent operation of a motor vehicle driving on a public highway after a Massachusetts Clerk Magistrate found probable cause. This is a monumental step in restoring justice.

We demand transparency and a Civilian Review Board with subpoena power. All members of our community, including public officials and law enforcement, should be held to the same standards. This case is an example as to why transparency and accountability are paramount. Justice needs to be restored in the public arena.

Through DARRCC, we shed light 💡

After viewing the NBC10 story reported by Investigative Reporter, Ryan Kath Thursday
evening, the members of the DARRC Coalition of Brockton are firmly committed to continuing
efforts the group has expended for the past two years to seek transparency and accountability
from the Brockton Police Department (BPD) and other city and state officials. The cover up of the multiple vehicle crash caused by former Police Chief Emmanuel Gomes on May 15, 2021 in Bridgewater is a devastating recent example of the standard response from BPD when Brockton residents seek transparency. The DARRC Coalition, their partners, and affiliates in Brockton Interfaith Community and MCAN - Massachusetts Communities Action Network are continuing to seek accountability and establish a Civilian Review Board to oversee the handling of disciplinary matters involving Brockton’s Police Department.

The response from BPD, City Hall, specifically former City Council President Winthrop Farwell and Mayor Sullivan, to these and other incidents including Gomes’ accident, has been consistent in the city denying any wrongdoing. Mayor Sullivan has continuously cited the need to speak with legal counsel but has not followed up in any way. The Mayor’s repeated response of not making hasty decisions has been a repeated position to deflect and support the ongoing inaction by city government officials. The total disregard of transparency, accountability and public concern are the reasons why we, the people, have to hold public officials and the police force accountable to reimagine what public safety should look like.

WE CALL FOR THE CREATION OF A CIVILIAN LED REVIEW BOARD and A COMPLETE RETHINKING AND REWRITING OF THE POLICE USE OF FORCE POLICY WITH EQUAL INPUT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS CHOSEN BY THE COMMUNITY.
