Lyrical Dance: An expressive and fluid form of dance that borrows heavily from it’s Balletic roots; a lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Because lyrical dancing focuses on the expression of strong emotion, the style concentrates more on an individual approach and expressiveness than the precision of the dancer's movements.Hip Hop is a fun, energetic class where the dancers learn a commercial dance style to popular music! Dancers are given the chance to expand their horizons and break out of their comfort zone, but most of all to have fun!

Calling all 7-10 year olds ~ Where you begin your Dance Journey matters. For our beginning level dancers (ages 7-10) we offer a graded level of instruction. Dance is about more than extensions and tricks and turns. Dance is about conveying story, emotion and passion. Dance, at it’s best and most intimate, should relate to the music and the story being told. Each dancer is unique in their ability to bring themselves to the material and to connect with an audience and to affect an emotional response. Great storytelling requires nuance, musicality, adaptability to different styles and a technique so well grounded and secure that the freedom to express comes without fear or second guessing. We strive to bring our students up as artists - to expand upon their innate and natural gifts so they may expand their ability to tell stories and connect with an audience. It is not a sport - it is an art form - and training with instructors who’ve spent a lifetime onstage connecting with audiences and with other humans in pursuit of a more nuanced goal than a plastic trophy - that’s what a conservatory approach will develop and it’s what we do at ATDW. Your child will spend time focused on their own individual goals and dreams - They will learn new material every week and focus on more than one number per season. They will be taught and learn a foundational technique that allows for multi-faceted and authentic performances from the heart - not just making faces and plastering their hair back with sparkles while wearing skimpy costumes. We support the individual and encourage the group to work together so all of them may reach their goals at their own pace and time. Come and see the difference between “comp” dancing and Conservatory Training. It's a truly restorative and refreshing change of pace.

PEOPLE ASK US ALL THE TIME...what is THEATER DANCE? How is it different from Musical Theater? Great Question - the styles complement one another perfectly - but, they are not the same. Theater Dance is a technique class based on the Broadway era from the 1920s to the present, our theater dance classes are sure to capture the heart of anyone interested in the performing arts. In this course, students learn strong technique in jazz fundamentals as well as choreography derived from various Broadway styles. Teachers lead students through a center warm up including stretches, isolations, and core strengthening. This is followed by across the floor technique and choreography. Theater Dance has standard levels that can be seen on our schedule. For teens who are new to dance or are interested in gaining dance skills for performing in Musical Theater, our Teen Theater Dance class is perfect for you. Now, Musical Theater Is a performance-based class, students work vocally with a Musical Director on songs from Broadway Musicals which are then staged and choreographed. Musical Theater is open to ages 6 and up. Musical Theater/Acting Performance Class is also a performance-based class, students work vocally with a Musical Director and Choreographer on songs and scenes from Broadway Musicals which are then staged and choreographed. There is also an Acting Component where we work on improvisations, acting technique, relaxation and vocal exercises, small scenes and group scenes. Musical Theater 15+ is open to ages 15 and up.
So, as you can see both styles go hand in hand for anyone who wants to perform in Musical Theater productions at their school or with us. Now you know!
We love the Community we've created with our dancers and their families at ATDW. We believe in supporting each and every one of our dancers where they are. By caring about WHO they are and what THEY WANT from THEIR DANCE JOURNEY. We would love to meet you and your dancer - come join us for Open House 9/8 and see what people are talking about.
