The role of hormones circulating throughout our body is not often discussed with patients. Estrogen plays a huge role in many systems including the joints and skin.

Estrogen has anti-inflammatory properties and helps maintain the health of connective tissues like muscle, tendon, and ligaments. Just consider some of the changes that occur during pregnancy, when estrogen levels increase above baseline allowing for the round ligament to stretch with growth of the uterus.

Estrogen also binds to receptors in the skin known as fibroblasts, which are responsible for collagen and elastin production. Collagen gives skin its strength and flexibility and elastin allows stretched skin to return to its original shape.

This is just one of the many body systems estrogens play a role in. Estrogen also affects brain function and fat distribution.
